Thanks to a goal by Bella Veljacic on a 30-yard shot, the Cal Lutheran women's soccer team leads 1-0 over Washington University of St. Louis at halftime of the NCAA Division III championship in Salem, Virginia.

GOAL REGALS!

Wow! Cal Lutheran has taken the lead with a 17th-minute wonder goal from forward Bella Veljacic.

She cut inside from the left and curled a shot from 30 yards off the crossbar. It glances off diving All-American goalkeeper Sidney Connor and into the Wash U net.

Veljacic apparently loves playing against Wash U. She scored twice, including a late winner, when CLU beat Wash U last season at Rolland Stadium.

Just the start the Regals needed without three starters.

Kickoff in Virginia

The NCAA Division III women’s soccer national championship match is underway at Roanoke College in Salem, Va.

After Cal Lutheran lost three starters during the semifinal against Tufts, the starting lineup was going to bring news and it has. Buena High graduate Savana Durr has recovered from injury well enough to start the national title game.

Avery West, the SCIAC Defensive Player of the Year, is out. She scored the Regals’ goal in the semifinal. So is midfielder Adriana Maroney.

The CLU starting lineup is Kelsey Slaugh, Savana Durr, MAdie Fahey, Ally Fisicaro, Hannah Gamez, Bryann McMahon, Anna Evenson, Eden Quiroz, Elisa Shott, Isabella Veljacic and Caitlyn Winter.

10' More news in the 10th minute. Durr has limped off injured again. So it seems like all three players injured in the semifinal Thursday won't be able to make an impact in the national final.
