Lions will open 2021 schedule at home vs. 49ers

The Dan Campbell era of Detroit Lions football will begin with a home date at Ford Field. Detroit will host the San Francisco 49ers in a Week 1 matchup to kick off the 2021 NFL season.

The full NFL schedule doesn’t get revealed until later on Wednesday, but the NFL allowed its media partners to release their Week 1 matchups earlier in the day. Detroit will host San Francisco on FOX in a 1 p.m. ET matchup.

It’s a meeting between two teams coming off disappointing last-place seasons. The 49ers went 6-10 in 2020 after advancing to the Super Bowl following the 2019 season. Detroit finished 5-11 and cleaned house before the end of the bitter season, which resulted in the new regime led by GM Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell.

It means the Lions will open at home, hopefully in front of more fans than just immediate family and close friends, which was all that was allowed in Ford Field in 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
