Lion softball team logs two wins over Truman

Mar. 3—The Missouri Southern softball team logged its fifth straight win and remained perfect at home (4-0) with two dominating performances over Truman State University on Saturday at Pat Lipira Field.

The Lions (15-4) earned a 12-4 win in a run-rule shortened first game of the doubleheader on Saturday.

Truman tallied a run in the top of the first, but the Lions put three across in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead. MSSU added three more in the bottom of the second inning to go into the third with a 6-1 lead.

Truman (7-10) logged three runs in the top of the third inning, making it 6-4, but the Lions erupted for five runs, including a solo home run by Kara Amos in the bottom of the frame to cushion their lead at 11-4. Southern added one more — an Abby DeSanto solo homer — in the bottom of the fourth and held Truman scoreless in the top of the fifth to claim the 12-4 win.

Taylor Nuckolls led the Lions, going 2-for-2 with four RBIs. DeSanto and Amos both were 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Kylee Jacks and Yazmin Vargas both logged two stolen bases for MSSU.

Amos (2-1) earned the win, giving up three runs on three hits while striking out two in one-and-a-third innings of work.

In game two on Saturday, the Lions jumped out to a 12-0 lead, with four runs each in the first three frames. Truman was able to put a run across in the top of the fourth, but MSSU responded with two of its own to claim the 14-1 run-rule shortened game.

The Lions outhit Truman 13-3, including two triples from Carsen Tinkler and one from Amos.

Three MSSU players recorded three hits. Amos was 3-for-3 with four RBIs, Tinkler was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Vargas finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs. Vargas also stole three bases and Jacks had two steals.

Starter Avery Tallman remained perfect at 5-0, giving up one run on three hits while striking out three and walking none in five innings.

The Lions travel to Springfield to face Drury for a 2 p.m. Tuesday doubleheader.
