LeBron James Didn’t Like the 'Squid Game' Ending
The following story contains spoilers for the finale of Season 1 of Netflix's Squid Game.
Unless you've been living under some kind of a rock or other large object, you've probably heard a bit of talk over the last month about a show on Netflix called Squid Game, which recently became the streaming giant's most-watched show ever. And with a lot of people watching this wild show that spans from action to thriller to dark comedy to drama, that means...a lot of opinions on the ending. If you count yourself as one of those who was not pleased with the way things wrapped up, you're not alone: among those in agreement are NBA Superstar LeBron James.
The Lakers star wrapped up a press conference recently and was asked by Anthony Davis (his fellow superstar teammate!) if he had finished watching the series. He had, he said, and was quick to share more opinions. "I didn't like the ending, though," he said. "I know they're starting off for a Season 2, but like, get on the fucking flight and go see your daughter, bro." Clearly, James wasn't happy with the choice lead character Gi-hun made at the end of the series to re-enter the next round of Squid Game before hopping home to see his daughter (but not before a random red dye hairdo or a snazzy new wardrobe).
LeBron wanted a rich, happy ending—and we don't blame him. Would it have hurt Squid Game to include a nice scene, even a brief one, to make us at least kind of happy after so much stress? But then again, we (and LeBron James) need to consider Gi-hun as a character. While we certainly saw his true colors and how he developed throughout the series, he's still far from perfect at his core. Remember, when we first saw him he was stealing money from his mom's bank account, and winning strange novelty toys from a claw machine for his young daughter. Not exactly the role model father you hear about.
Davis was in agreement with LeBron. "What the fuck are you doing?" He said, just before taking his own place at the podium. LeBron continued: "Five billon dollars, bro, you're gonna...what the fuck?"
The two superstars also were in agreement that Gi-hun needed to just move on. "Not my problem anymore," AD said. LeBron agreed. "It's not my problem! You won the game!"
We'll have to see if Squid Game creator/writer/director considers the notes of LeBron, AD, and everyone else in agreement before diving into the Squid Game Season 2 that we all know is on the way, even if Netflix hasn't officially confirmed it yet.
