Sep. 13—The Aiken County community is invited to celebrate 18th century explorer Mark Catesby during multiple events this weekend.

Two events are being held in honor of Mark Catesby, the 18th century explorer, scientist, artist, naturalist and author, who explored what is now Aiken County not long after South Carolina became a colony. The events are celebrating Catesby's 300th anniversary in South Carolina.

On Saturday, Sept. 17, a nature walk celebrating the 300th anniversary of Mark Catesby will be held from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. at the Silver Bluff Audubon Center and Sanctuary, 4542 Silver Bluff Road, Jackson.

The family-friendly event will be a guided walk through the sanctuary with a slide show presentation on Catesby. There also will be a kids' coloring station.

On Sunday, Sept. 18, the Aiken County Historical Society will hold its general meeting at 3 p.m. at the Aiken County Historical Museum where John Myers, of the Lexington County Historical Museum, will be the guest speaker.

Myers will give an interactive presentation on Mark Catesby and come dressed in period clothing to portray Catesby. The presentation will feature the artwork and findings of Catesby. The program is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.

The museum is located at 433 Newberry St. S.W.
