Latest signing news around the Panhandle and what to expect Wednesday

There's been a lot of buzz around the area with signings and commitments and with national signing day on Wednesday, it made sense to take a look at what all has been happening.

Two weeks ago, Bushland's Leah Ruthardt signed to run track at the next level. She'll be continuing her career in the 400 by making the 30 minute move to Canyon, joining West Texas A&M.

On Friday, three Randall Raiders made their intentions known. Blane Brannon signed to play baseball with Centralia while Carson Haffner signed with Midland College. Haggen Shedd, who'd long ago made his commitment to Texas Tech, put name to paper on Friday.

Brannon caught 163 innings last year and batted .330 for a Randall team that advanced to the state tournament for the first time in a decade and a half. Haffner went 9-1 on the mound with an ERA of 1.69 while Shedd was a member of the Amarillo Globe-News Super Team.

"My family has meant everything to me (through this process)," Haffner said. "My dad is the hardest worker I've ever met and he instilled that in me. ... Last year was unreal and we lose a lot of the star players so it'll be a tough fight, but it's been awesome to see the younger guys step up in practice."

Amarillo High had a player make a verbal commitment to a Division I program last week and will put pen to paper on Wednesday. Rylan Leathers will play FCS football for Idaho State this fall. Last year, Leathers put up 100 tackles, six pass breakups and two interceptions.

Leathers will sign at the Amarillo High Commons at 6 p.m. Wednesday. He'll be joined by Eddy M'Pela (West Texas A&M), JQ Ervin (Eastern New Mexico) and Brenham Elerick (ENMU).

Three River Road athletes will sign on Wednesday morning. Jaelun Nelson signs to play football for ENMU, Ashtyn Collins will run track at Washburn and Audrey Threet will play basketball at Kansas Wesleyan. That ceremony will be held at 9 a.m.

One of the best players the state of Texas has ever seen will also ink his NLI on national signing day. Canadian's Camren Cavalier, who broke the single-season touchdown record this past season, will sign to play football for Hardin University at Noon.

West Texas A&M will hold a press conference at 3 p.m. at Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium that is open to the public to discuss signing day. Last year's commitment list was filled with Panhandle players. It remains to be seen how many local will join head coach Joshy Lynn and the Buffaloes in 2024.

Tascosa will hold a signing ceremony at 4 p.m. in the THS foyer. Jaterrous McChristian and Cassius Carter will sign with Eastern New Mexico while Trealean Luckey will sign with WT.
