Latest CBS Sports mock draft makes NFL history

Now that college basketball season is over in Chapel Hill, it’s time to start looking ahead toward April’s NFL draft.

One of the top projected selections will be former Tar Heel quarterback Drake Maye, who took the college football world by storm the last two seasons. Maye threw for 8,018 passing yards, 63 touchdowns and 16 interceptions, and he ran for 1,209 yards and 16 touchdowns in his UNC career.

Maye can do pretty much anything under center. He has a super strong arm and ability to evade pressure, but there’s some debate to where in the top 10 he will be selected.

CBS Sports has him as a part of NFL history in its latest mock draft.

The media outlet projects quarterbacks to be taken with the first four picks, which if it happens would be the first time in NFL history. CBS Sports’ latest mock has Maye going second to the Washington Commanders). The outlet has Caleb Williams (No. 1), Jayden Daniels (No. 3) and J.J. McCarthy (No.4) completing the foursome.

Let’s see what CBS Sports has to say about the former Tar Heel standout, who’s projected to take over in the Nation’s Capitol:

“To the surprise of no one, Washington stays put and takes Drake Maye,” CBS Sports’ Josh Edwards said. “There are a lot of different voices involved in the decision-making process; some of which will prefer the dual-threat nature of Jayden Daniels and others that will prefer the prototypical Maye.”

I’ve seen other mock drafts with Maye going third to the New England Patriots, which would be a logical landing spot considering their lack of a proven starting quarterback. There was even one with Maye going to the Minnesota Vikings.

Wherever Maye lands, that team will obtain a fiery, passionate leader that can help it rebuild.
