Las Vegas Raiders hire Canton McKinley grad Josh McDaniels as their head coach

The Las Vegas Raiders hired McKinley High School graduate Josh McDaniels as their next head coach, introducing him Monday.

McDaniels, 45, has been New England's offensive coordinator since 2012. He held the same role for the Patriots from 2005-08.

McDaniels is viewed as one of the brighter offensive minds in the game with his many years working with Tom Brady on the Patriots and his work this past season helping to develop rookie Mac Jones. The Patriots went 10-7 this past regular season, reached the playoffs with Jones at QB, and lost in the wild-card round to the Buffalo Bills.

McDaniels first experience as head coach fell apart quickly following a 6-0 start in 2009 after he traded away quarterback Jay Cutler in one of his first moves. Denver finished 8-8 that season and McDaniels was fired with a 3-9 record in 2010, losing 17 of his final 22 games as coach.

The move to the Raiders returns McDaniels to the head coaching ranks nearly four years after he backed out of an agreement to take over the Indianapolis Colts' top job to stay with the Patriots.

McDaniels starred at quarterback and kicker for the McKinley Bulldogs in high school, playing for his father, Thom. Josh was inducted into the Stark County High School Football Hall of Fame in 2020. He played college football at John Carroll.

McDaniels entered coaching as a graduate assistant at Michigan State on Nick Saban's staff in 1999. He spent one year out of coaching before landing a job on Bill Belichick's staff in New England.

McDaniels spent 18 seasons with the Patriots, 13 of them as the team's offensive coordinator. During his time with the Patriots, McDaniels helped them win six Super Bowls, including three as the offensive coordinator.

Dave Ziegler is being hired as the general manager. Ziegler is a Tallmadge High School graduate. He played wide receiver, cornerback and kick returner for the Blue Devils.

After high school, Ziegler attended John Carroll, where he was roommates with McDaniels.

In New England, Ziegler's previous position was director of player personnel. He's had various roles in New England's front office since 2013.

The duo inherits a Raiders team (10-7) that made it to the wild-card round of the playoffs this season before losing to the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Raiders began the 2021 season with Jon Gruden in the fourth year of a 10-year contract. Gruden resigned in October after emails were publicized with the coach using racist, misogynistic and homophobic language.

The emails were part of the NFL's investigation into the Washington Football Team's workplace culture.

In November, Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III was charged with a DUI and reckless driving after a fatal car accident. The 2020 first-round pick was released shortly thereafter. A week later, the team released defensive back Damon Arnette, another former first-round pick. He was seen on a video online threatening someone with a gun.

Former general manager Mike Mayock was fired after the season.
