Larry French column: Junior bowler Sturdevant rolls 807 series, trio of 300s in Corning

It was quite a week at Crystal Lanes with all kinds of scoring excitement — a trio of perfect games, three bowlers with first-ever accomplishments, a near-miss 800 series, three more 700s for the juniors and yet another 700 for the seniors.

But, with all that going on, nothing beats what Zachery Sturdevant did during the junior bowling action that happens every Saturday. Zachery joined a very short list of junior bowlers when he blasted an 807 series in the CIBA Jr./Sr. Mixed League. The last junior bowler to accomplish it was two years ago when Joseph Enderle recorded an 811 series in the same league.

After opening the session with a 277 game, Zachery came up with a 252 and that always gives you a shot. He didn’t waste it. Zachery rung up a 278 final game with some clutch shots to give him his 807 series. That big set pushed his average to the 224 mark. Not only was he high shooter in the junior circuit, it gives him weekly high score honors and he was only one pin shy of the season high mark of the 808 series for Jeff Crawford.

Zack Crown also created some excitement in this junior league when he registered his first ever 700 series. Zack got better each game putting up scores of 223, 246 and 257 for a 726 series. There were also five other youngsters in this league over six. Camryn Stefanini led the quintet with a 695 that featured a 257 game. Bentley Goodier tossed a 637 while Cameron Kennedy pulled off a 623 while Dante White and Peyton Nelson rolled matching 622 sets.

The other two 700s for the juniors came out of the Fall Adult/Junior Mixed League. Camryn Stefanini put together games of 249, 247 and 226 for a 722 series while Cameron Kennedy added to his 700 haul this season with a 702 set that featured a 257 game. In other junior action, Corban Breckenridge had a 103 game in the Bumper League.

Bush, Farr, Madigan roll 300 games

All three of the perfect games registered this week were of the ‘first-ever’ variety, with a twist. That twist came out of the Hatfield Real Estate Men’s League when Ron Bush and Brandon Farr became the first teammates to roll 300 games in the same game for the same team. It’s been done before, but not this year.

Ron led off the daily double for the Lane 33 Pro Shop with his first perfect game in the Corning Bowling Association. But his glory was short-lived two bowlers later when Brandon matched him. For Brandon, it was the first 300 game of his bowling career. And, if they still had a most-improved bowler for the year, he would be in the running.

Ron chased his perfect game with a 290 before running out of gas in game three. His 193 final game pushed him to a 783 total. Brandon’s perfecto led to a 711 set. Five other guys in this league also topped seven. Mike Brewster unleashed a 740 set while Chad Farr capped a 739 with a 268 game and Nick Dobson rode a 288 first game to a 721 total. Max Dunning’s 707 and a 703 by Jim Pitts rounded out the scoring. And the cherry on top was Will Bates registering his first-ever six, a 608 effort on games of 216, 189 and 203.

Adam Madigan garnered the third 300 of the week when he capped a 741 series in the Tire World of Corning Men’s League with the last 12 rockets to the pocket. Adam got leaps and bounds better each game. He chased a 183 opener with a 258 before getting real serious with nothing but strikes for perfection.

The Tire World League also had another half-dozen scores over seven including men’s weekly honors. Nick Dobson corralled that when he blasted a 799 series on games of 266, 279 and 254. One loose pin. Nick’s teammates Mike Brewster and Joe Crown added scores of 743 and 704 respectively while Tim DeGraw capped a 746 set with a 277 game. Carl Packard’s 725 and Chad Farr’s 702 capped the seven-shooters.

Dan Cooper’s 738 series, that featured a 277 game, paced a quartet of 700s in the Joey’s Contracting Mixed League. He was joined by Josh Swithers with a 717, a 707 by Corey Miller and Tim DeGraw’s 704 set. In other men’s action, Bob McGinnis paced the Jubilee Foods Mixed League with scores of 757 and 737 respectively while Trey Potter’s 739 topped the Gary Cortright Memorial Mixed League.

Hailey Blencowe garnered scoring honors for the ladies this week when she capped a 646 set with a 226 game in the Savona Storage Ladies League.

Deon Frost tied herself for runner-up honors this week when she rolled a 640 series in two different leagues. She opened the week with a 640 series, that included a 247 game, to lead the Giardina Building & Remodeling Ladies League. The next night in the Joey’s Contracting Mixed League, Deon’s second 640 was accented by a 246 game. She certainly knows how to build something. Just start with a pair of 640 sets.

Three other ladies topped 600 in the Giardina’s League. Lori Calkins continued her hot streak with another six. This time she highlighted a 232 game on her way to a 638 total. Kim Lovell and Cheryl Rice both posted a 224 game. Kim’s led to a 621 set while Cheryl settled for a 613 series. Cheryl also topped the Atlas Pizzeria Mixed League with a 612 series.

For the fourth time this season, John Stermer broke through the 700 barrier in the Chilson-Wilcox Senior Men’s League. After opening the session with a 235 game, John blasted a 287 game and then came home with a 214 effort for a 738 series.

Five other fellows topped six in the C-W League. Bruce Stanton led this quintet with a 655 series while Mike Dunn came up with a 634 total. Gary Gustin rolled a 625 series while Tim DeGraw managed a 620 and George Nichols posted a 603 series.

Gary Gustin saved his best effort for the Striking Seniors Mixed League when he put together games of 2l13, 244 and 224 for a 681 series. In other senior action, Ken Mattison and Don Machuga both topped six in the Go-Getters Mixed League. Ken kicked off a 671 series with a 261 game while Don came away with a 607 series.
