Isabelle Lacy continued her stunning start to the summer with victory over former Wimbledon quarter-finalist Viktorija Golubic at the LTA’s Lexus Ilkley Trophy.

The 16-year-old stunned the Swiss player, who sits over 500 places higher in the world rankings and reached the last four at SW19 in 2021, with a comeback 2-6 6-4 6-3 triumph in Yorkshire.

The win continues the teenager’s fine recent form after she beat Madison Brengle at the LTA’s Lexus Surbiton Trophy earlier this month.

Lacy will be joined in the next round by compatriot Sonay Kartal, who eased past Swiss fourth seed Simona Waltert 6-1 6-0 in just 51 minutes.

Kartal cruised past her opponent, who reached the second round of the French Open earlier this month, converting five out of six break points and losing just 26 points in total across both sets.

However, it was defeat for 15-year-old wildcard Mimi Xu, who battled hard against Indian eighth seed Ankita Raina before eventually going down 6-3 6-7(3) 6-1, while Sarah Grey lost 0-6 6-1 6-1 to tenth seed Zeynep Sonmez.

In the men’s draw, there was victory for wildcard Charles Broom as he overcame world No. 152 Gijs Brouwer 7-6(5) 6-2 to book his place in the second round.

Broom had fought through two rounds of qualifying to set up a tie against the Dutchman and is now rewarded with a last 16 match against Raul Brancaccio, who beat Brit Johannus Monday 6-3 6-3.

And there was also defeat for Toby Samuel, who lost a three-set thriller to Australia’s Alex Bolt 2-6 7-6(6) 7-5.

The 20-year-old wildcard had raced into an early lead after breaking twice in the first set before Bolt bounced back to edge a second-set tie-break and then found the decisive break at the very end of the third to seal victory.
