L/L-M boys beat Hankinson 71-64 in Region 1 basektball tourney
Mar. 4—JAMESTOWN — The LaMoure/Litchville-Marion boys' basketball team was able to hold on late to a 71-64 win over Hankinson High School during the first round of the Region 1 tournament on Monday, March 4, at the Jamestown Civic Center.
The Pirates (18-4) took an early 6-3 lead in the first quarter before the Loboes responded to take a 9-8 lead. The Pirates responded with a three to take an 11-9 lead into the second.
After only having two points in the first quarter, the Loboes' Max Musland opened the second quarter with two quick threes and used that to head into the half with 17 points. Behind a big quarter from Musland, the Loboes (14-9) had a big second quarter , taking a 29-22 lead into the half.
"I just gotta shoot, everyone tells me I need to shoot more and that's what I did and it worked out," Musland said
During the opening half, the Loboes shot 61% from the field while the Pirates shot 34.5%. Both teams were efficient off turnovers in the opening half, with each turning it over four times, and the Loboes scoring six points off those turnovers. The Pirates scored four points off those giveaways.
The Loboes kept it up in the third quarter, stretching their lead to 51-38 heading into the fourth.
"We just stacked good offensive possessions on top of each other," Loboes head coach Tyler Thielges said. "We only had six turnovers against a team that thrives in their transition offense. So that was able to limit their strength a little bit with us taking care of the ball against their athletic defense. We didn't settle, the guys shot the ball with unshakeable confidence, and today they ended up going down. It's hard to lose a game when the ball's going in the net."
The Pirates would not go down without a fight, though, as they cut their deficit down to 69-64 before the Loboes put the game away at the free-throw line.
"They never quit, making our foul shots, getting to the line, really attacking," Pirates head coach Carter Mauch said. "I wish they would've done that sooner in the game, really attacking and making them get into foul trouble and making them have to defend our dribble drive and ultimately our kick-out game when we threw out to our shooters. I thought they did a really good job of being physical and stopping our dribble penetration in the first half."
Musland was not the only player in the game with a big performance as the Pirates' Raeshaun Earl scored 39 points on 15-for-32 shooting. Musland finished his day with 31 points on 10-for-20 shooting.
The Loboes return to the court at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, when they take on the winner of the game between Ellendale and Barnes County North.
