What you should know about new Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks

The Dolphins are adding former Seattle linebacker Jordyn Brooks, 26, on a three-year deal worth $30 million.

Brooks, who’s 6 feet and 240 pounds, makes tackles. A lot of them.

Over the past three seasons, he has not failed to make at least 100 total tackles. Even that statement doesn’t quite do his record justice because in 2021, while playing right outside linebacker for the Seahawks, Brooks made 184 total tackles and led the NFL with 109 solo tackles.

In 2022, he had 161 total tackles. Last year, he had 111. Both of those seasons saw him playing inside linebacker.

For perspective, Steve Towle made 217 tackles in 1976, the most of any Dolphin in a season. Predictably, the next four slots are all taken by Zach Thomas, including a high of 195 in 2002.

Brooks appears to be a fast healer

It should be noted that his 2022 season was cut short by a week when he suffered a torn ACL. The injury occurred on Jan. 1, 2023.

What’s notable about that: He still was on the field for the 2023 opener. Teammate Bobby Wagner called Brooks’ recovery “amazing.”

Seahawks on the phone? So much for al dente pasta

Brooks was a first-round pick of the Seahawks in 2020, taken 27th overall.

The most surprised person may have been Brooks. He wasn’t in the green room when it happened. In fact, he wasn’t anywhere near the draft.

He was cooking pasta back home in Dallas.

“I wasn’t surprised about the first round, I was surprised the Seahawks came and got me,” Brooks said following his selection. “I hadn’t talked to them since the combine, so I wasn’t really expecting them to pick me. But I’m very grateful and excited to get down there in Seattle.”

There’s a reason things played out the way they did. The Seahawks didn’t think too many teams were in on how promising Brooks looked for Texas Tech. So they played it cool to avoid tipping off the competition.

Good thing Brooks had a defensive coach in high school

Growing up, Brooks didn’t envision himself as the next Thomas or Brian Urlacher.

His favorites were Barry Sanders, Walter Payton and Reggie Bush.

“As a kid, I didn’t play linebacker,” Brooks told seahawks.com. “I played running back all the way up to my junior year of high school. My high school coach was a defensive coach and he always put his best players on defense, so that’s what got me playing linebacker. I like being physical.”

Brooks, by the way, attended Stratford High in Houston. If that sounds familiar, it’s also the alma mater of ex-Colts QB Andrew Luck.

He’s kinda partial to the Caped Crusader

Seahawks.com also asked Brooks for his take on fictional characters.

Sorry, Superman, but Brooks is partial to Batman.

Brooks explains: "I like Batman the most because he doesn't have any powers, but he has all the gadgets and he outthinks everybody. A little bit of martial arts in there. I just think he's got the best movies too, so I would say Batman."
