Kliff Kingsbury named one of league’s top playcallers by PFF

The Arizona Cardinals saw big offensive improvements in 2019 and that was in large part because of the offensive scheme and playcalling of head coach Kliff Kingsbury. Pro Football Focus was a big fan of his work in his first year as head coach.

Kingsbury was named one of PFF’s five best playcallers in the league entering 2020.

He led the Cardinals to improve from 2018 to 2019 by 1.2 yards per play to 5.5 yards. According to PFF, that “was better than the 13-3 Green Bay Packers, the 12-4 New England Patriots and the 10-6 Buffalo Bills.”

He overcame an awful defense and problems on the offensive line.

Kingsbury gets high marks when looking at “uniqueness” of a scheme, and for good reason; he ran more 10 personnel than anyone else in the league, while only the Saints threw shorter passes on average. Only two quarterbacks had more designed runs than Kyler Murray, but Kingsbury’s usage of pre-snap motion was among the league lows — an increase there could benefit the Cardinals even more in 2020.

With the addition of DeAndre Hopkins, a full year of Kenyan Drake and the rest of the unit large staying the same, they should be able to build and improve, even with no offseason, due to their continuity.

We will see soon enough if he can continue to innovate and improve.
