Kings-Pistons gameday live: Latest on Keegan Murray, Malik Monk; Marvin Bagley III returns

Note: Come back to this story throughout the day for the latest news, notes and injury updates on today’s game.

Marvin Bagley III will return to Sacramento for the first time since he was traded when the Kings entertain the Detroit Pistons on Sunday at Golden 1 Center.

Bagley’s star-crossed career began in Sacramento when the Kings chose him over Luka Doncic with the No. 2 pick in the 2018 NBA draft. The weight of that decision by former general manager Vlade Divac, while strongly backed by the rest of the organization, put immense pressure on Bagley and the entire franchise.

After four seasons of frustration, the two sides finally parted ways in February when the Kings traded Bagley to the Pistons in a four-team deal that brought Donte DiVincenzo, Trey Lyles and Josh Jackson to Sacramento.

Bagley will play against his former team for the first time Sunday.

The Kings (8-6) have won five in a row and eight of their last 10. They are seeking their first six-game winning streak since the 2004-05 season. Players and fans alike will be eager to light the beam, the purple laser that shines over the arena every time the Kings win.

Rookie forward Keegan Murray is listed as probable after missing Thursday’s 130-112 victory over the San Antonio Spurs due to lower back soreness. Guard Malik Monk is questionable after undergoing a dental procedure.

The Pistons (3-14) have lost six in a row and nine of their last 10. Cade Cunningham (shin), Saddiq Bey (ankle) and Isaiah Stewart (toe) have all been ruled out against the Kings.

Bagley has appeared in just four games, starting three of them, after missing the beginning of the season with a bone bruise and sprained MCL in his right knee. He is averaging 8.8 points and 5.0 rebounds while shooting 45.2% from the field and 16.7% from 3-point range, all career lows. Bagley has appeared in just 170 of a possible 335 career games (50.7%) due to various injuries.

Bagley was an NBA All-Rookie First Team selection after averaging 14.9 points and 7.6 rebounds in 62 games for the Kings in 2018-19, but then misfortune began to take its toll. He appeared in just 13 games in 2019-20, 43 games in 2020-21 and 30 games in 2021-22 before he was traded to Detroit.

Bey upgraded

Bey was ruled out for Sunday’s game when Detroit submitted its injury report Saturday, but the Pistons have upgraded his status just hours before the game. Bey is now listed as questionable.
