Kernels excel in the field, on track at First Dakota Relays

Apr. 25—YANKTON, S.D. — Nathan McCormick and Taylor DeJong each took first place in one event, highlighting the Mitchell High School track and field team's performances at the First Dakota Relays on Friday.

McCormick claimed the boys' 200-meter dash title in a time of 23.70 seconds to go with a 100-meter time of 11.38 seconds, which was good for fourth place.

DeJong won the girls' shot put with a heave of 35 feet, 8.75 inches, and added a runner-up finish in the discus (109-4).

On the boys side, Mitchell's 4x200-meter relay brought home a third event victory for the Kernels, as Caden Olegario, Carter Lee, Will Prunty and Connor Singrey crossed in 1:33.51 to edge out Sioux Falls Christian (1:33.73).

Also on the relay front, Singrey, Prunty and McCormick combined with Grayson Hetland to take second in the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay (3:43.43). Lee, Singrey, Hetland and Colton Smith finished third in the 4x400-meter relay (3:38.56).

Individually, Smith was second in the high jump at 5 feet, 9 inches, while Carter Harris claimed third in the pole vault (12-6). Hunter Patton was fourth in the 1,600 meters (4:36.03).

In the girls' competition, Lilly Young was right behind DeJong, placing third in the shot put (34-11.5) and fourth in the discus (104-3). Audrey Miller was fourth in the triple jump (32-11).

Emerson Smith took third in the 800 meters (2:26.18), with Carsyn Weich in fifth (2:27.21).

Mitchell is back in action on Tuesday, April 30, for a home triangular with O'Gorman and Yankton.
