Thursday

Somers 15, Greeley 6

Message sent. Message received.

Greeley was up a goal in the first quarter Thursday and starting to believe it might be on the verge of a breakthrough. Somers dialed up the intensity, responded with a methodical nine-goal outburst and went on to post 15-6 win.

Well before the final buzzer sounded, it was clear the Quakers have more work to do if they want to play for a Section 1 Class B title.

This is an important stretch for the Tuskers, as well.

Somers has lofty expectations and is prepping for the playoffs with a closing stretch that also includes John Jay, Rye and Pleasantville.

“We know these last four games on the schedule are going to be hard and we understand this could make or break us,” said Ryan Brush, who netted four goals for the Tuskers. “We’re aiming for sectionals and states. Our team right now, we’re buzzing, and I think we can win it all.”

The offense has been rolling all season. The defense has so far exceeded all expectations and ran step for step with a team that averages 12 goals a game.

“This defense has changed a lot in terms of personnel and concepts, in general, with coach (Chris) Spillane leading us,” Tuskers defender Brendan Lyle said. “I think we all came together and really bonded, so we’re playing now as a unit. We always have high expectations, and we go into each game believing we can stop the other team.”

What it means

Somers didn’t possess smartly after Grayden Carr extended the lead to 11-3 in the closing minutes of the third period. There will likely be some nail-biters in the days ahead, so that has to be corrected quickly. Greeley has earned the right to be optimistic, but there has to be more improvement at both ends of the field and in short order if this team is going to be competitive with the likes of Yorktown or Somers.

“It’s really that difference between pretenders and contenders, to be honest,” said Jameson Blakeslee, who scored three times for the Quakers. “We need to practice a lot more seriously and I really hope this opens up our eyes. I hope that over the next couple of days we improve a lot. We know what we need to work on. I think by playoffs, we’ll be ready, but we have to focus on the next game. Byram Hills is a good team so we have to focus on them.”

Player of the game

Landon Pepe is responsible for more momentum swings than any other player on the roster. He was again simply outstanding.

Tuesday

Yorktown 9, Rye 8

There was lightning. There was thunder.

And the fast-approaching storm provided a perfect backdrop for Chris Constantine’s pole goal that sent everyone home as the rain began to fall.

The senior defender unleashed from 15 yards out in double-overtime Tuesday, giving Yorktown a 9-8 win over Rye.

It was a wild affair.

Henry Gilroy capped a defiant four-goal rally and put the Garnets on top for the first time all night when he scored with 2.8 seconds to play.

Game over?

Nope. In a highly-adrenalized moment, Chad Bowen won the faceoff, took a couple of steps into the clear and got off a desperation heave ahead of the horn. And it went in, stopping everyone who had begun trekking back up the hill to the parking lot to make a hasty U-turn.

“That was exciting,” Huskers coach Tim Schurr said. “I’ve never seen that, maybe on TV. It was a great play. Getting that shot off was really a great play.”

Bowen also scored in overtime Saturday to dispatch Mamaroneck.

“I just reverse-clamped him and chucked the ball,” he said. “There was only a second or whatever left and it ended up going in. It was a roller coaster game, up and down, but we finished and that is the most important part.”

Constantine scored in transition with 8:30 to play in regulation to give Yorktown a 7-4 lead, but Tyler McDermott got the comeback started with a pair of hard-earned goals. The game was physical from the start. The deficit was down to a goal after McDermott set up Tucker Hess with 3:26 to go.

The Garnets ran the clock down in regulation before taking a shot in the final 20 seconds without backup. A long outlet by the Huskers was intercepted and brought all the way back. Gilroy collected a pass from Joe Chai and scored on the run.

Both sides had chances in the first overtime. Yorktown had a two-man advantage when Constantine hustled back toward midfield to recover a pass that went off his stick and moved into an open seam for the winner.

It was the Huskers’ fourth overtime win of the season. It was the second straight OT loss for Rye.

“They’re a great team and the fact that we were able to stay in there and play a complete game shows the chemistry this group has,” Constantine said. “At the end of the day, every single guy on this team is putting it all out there and that really means a lot. This is just a great example of why you never give up because anything can happen.”

What it means

Timely offense has been an issue for both teams, so the fact that both sides were able to manufacture goals under pressure against some of the best defensive players in Section 1 has to be seen as progress.

Player of the game

Bowen had a good plan when he got into position on the faceoff and executed perfectly.

Ridgefield, Conn. 11, Iona Prep 10

Iona Prep had a chance to pick up the first marquee win of the season, but a humbling start overshadowed a furious comeback.

Changes were made on the fly.

The Gaels were down five at the intermission, but evened the score before falling 11-10 in overtime at Ridgefield, Conn.

“Coming back like that is a sign that we’re good enough to play against any team, but it’s also showing that we’re not playing with the right intensity in the parts of the game where we’re struggling,” said Iona Prep attackman Tim Plunkett, who forced OT with 30 seconds to play. “It’s both good and bad.”

Kyle Colsey rolled off a defender and netted the winner on the second Tigers possessions of the overtime.

“We can hang with anybody if we play well,” Gaels FOGO Christian Tapia said. “When you start like that, it’s hard. We have a big game coming up later this week against Chaminade, so hopefully we can get it rolling.”

Ridgefield was up 8-3 at the break.

Steven Kidder capped a three-goal run to open the second half, but Ridgefield eventually got the momentum and went ahead 10-6 with 7:11 to go in regulation on a Colsey goal.

Billy Haggerty and Plunkett took over from there and punctuated an impressive closing run, netting two goals apiece.

“We were trying to run a different defense in the first half that clearly didn’t work, so we went back to basics and just played our regular game,” Iona Prep coach Rick Trizano said. “The season is winding down and I was hoping to get one of these big wins, but we still have a few left.”

What it means

The Gaels have a quick turnaround and play St. Joseph’s Regional on Tuesday before closing out the regular season with three quality opponents – Chaminade, Cheshire, Conn. and Shenendehowa. If this group can get a little healthier and play a little smarter, Iona Prep could go 3-1 to finish out. If the Gaels aren’t ready to play, they could go 2-2 and head into the postseason without momentum.

Co-players of the game

Things happened when Kyle Colsey or Plunkett had the ball in their sticks.
