Kayla Rechenbach hired as girls volleyball coach of new Spartanburg school Mountain View Prep

Mountain View Prep has hired Stars Sports − formerly Upward Stars − club team coach and former Spartanburg Methodist assistant Kayla Rechenbach as its first girls volleyball coach.

"When we met with Kayla, it didn't take long to hear her passion for the sport and the girls she's been around," said athletic director and football coach Grey Ramsey. "With her club experience and the things that she's been able to do, not only on a local level but a national level, her record speaks for itself."

Rechenbach coached the U17 team at Stars for three seasons and led them to a No. 1 ranking in South Carolina, according to the Palmetto Volleyball Association. Before her time in Spartanburg, she was coach and director of volleyball at Fellowship Christian School in Georgia for four years, finishing with an overall record of 127-58.

One of the reasons Mountain View and Rechenbach were a good fit was their desire to develop the whole person from a young age.

"We were really blown away by how invested she is in the lives of her players," Ramsey said. "Something that's important to me is our player development model ... which requires our coaches to be invested in our players' lives like she's shown to be."

"I think it's super exciting to have those middle school kids on the same campus as well ... it's important to get the whole program involved to build our volleyball family from an early age," Rechenbach said.

As an athlete, Rechenbach played both volleyball and basketball at Berry College and Lee University, an experience she and Ramsey feel is a benefit to the program.

"We want our kids to be college and career ready. We want them to be able to go off to college and have success," Ramsey said. "She knows exactly what it takes to do it."

Rechenbach was a two-time NAIA All-American and two-time SSAC Tournament MVP while reaching two consecutive NAIA national volleyball tournament final fours. She was also selected to the SSAC All-East Division basketball team and reached the NAIA national basketball tournament final four.

In the classroom, she was a two-time NAIA All-American scholar-athlete and a three-time SSAC All-Academic team selection.

"I know what it takes for high school kids to be successful at the college level and how to get them there," Rechenbach said. "At the same time, both academics and discipline won't suffer because of volleyball. That's just as big for me."
