Kasey Kahne, 28th in points, getting new crew chief
Kasey Kahne’s lack of success at Leavine Family Racing means he’s getting a new crew chief.
The team announced Saturday that it had replaced Travis Mack as the team’s crew chief. Mack came over from Hendrick Motorsports, where he served as the car chief for Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2017. Kahne also came from Hendrick, which bought out the last year of his contract and replaced him with William Byron.
Jon Leonard will be Kahne’s new crew chief.
Kahne found a landing spot with the No. 95 team but things haven’t been great. He’s 28th in the points standings through the first 15 races of the season and doesn’t have a top-10 finish. Mack has been aggressive on some strategy calls — most notably last week at Michigan — but the team’s lack of speed has been apparent. LFR has an alliance with Richard Childress Racing.
Kahne’s best finishes of the season came when he was 17th at both Talladega and Dover in consecutive weeks.
The team’s performance is slightly worse than it was in 2017 with Michael McDowell behind the wheel, though Chevy teams have struggled as a whole with their new Camaro cars. McDowell was 26th in the points standings a year ago and had just one top-10 finish.
