Jurgen Klopp announces shock decision to leave Liverpool

Liverpool have announced that Jurgen Klopp is to resign as manager and depart the club at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

The German boss arrived at Anfield in 2015 and has reestablished the club as a domestic and European force, reaching three Champions League finals since then - winning one - as well as winning the Premier League title in 2020.

His departure is all the more unexpected as he embarked on a rebuild of the playing squad over the summer, with Liverpool currently sat top of the league table, into the Carabao Cup final and potentially on course for a four-trophy tilt as they continue in the Europa League and FA Cup as well.

Liverpool great

Klopp could finish with the highest win percentage of any manager in Liverpool’s history and still has the chance to climb from fourth place in terms of trophies won with the club.

As of the announcement of the German’s imminent departure he has won 60.7 per cent of matches, trailing only Sir Kenny Dalglish’s 60.9 per cent across two spells and narrowly ahead of the club’s formative managerial partnership William Edward Barclay and John McKenna who won 60.6 per cent from 1892 to 1896.

Only Bob Paisley, with 20 trophies including six league titles, Bill Shankly (11) and Dalglish (nine) rank ahead of Klopp’s trophy count with the club.

With Liverpool still competing on four fronts this season – top of the league and in another Carabao Cup final, as well as the Europa League knockout stages and this Sunday’s FA Cup fourth-round clash with Norwich – he has the opportunity to match or pass Dalglish and even potentially catch Shankly with a perfect finish to the season.

Trophy cabinet

That league title and the 2018-19 Champions League stand out as the highlights of Klopp’s Anfield reign but success has come in all competitions.

Victory over Tottenham in Madrid, following a spectacular semi-final fightback against Barcelona, brought his first trophy with the club and the following season saw Liverpool win the UEFA Super Cup, the Club World Cup and then the Premier League.

A domestic cup double in 2021-22, winning both finals in penalty shoot-outs against Chelsea, allowed them to add the 2022 Community Shield.

An eighth different trophy could come in this season’s Europa League, a competition in which Liverpool lost the 2015-16 final to Sevilla at the end of Klopp’s debut season.

Win record

Jurgen Klopp arrived in October 2015 as Brendan Rodgers’ replacement and while he made a low-key start in a goalless draw with Tottenham, and draws in his first three games overall, it was the precursor to one of the club’s most successful eras.

He has won more than 60 per cent of his 466 games in charge – with a minimum of 21 remaining this season – and provided Liverpool’s greatest Premier League performances since the competition’s rebranding.

They won the 2019-20 title with 99 points, just one fewer than Manchester City’s record 100 two years earlier, while their 97 as runners-up in 2018-19 is a record for any team who did not finish as champions. They lead this season’s standings, five points clear of City having played one game more.

Klopp’s next Premier League win will be his 200th, with his record currently standing at 199 out of 317 games. In all competitions he has won 283, drawn 105 and lost 78 and the club have scored 972 goals on his watch, a number that will surely hit four figures before the season is out.

The consequences of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool departure – and why his legacy is beyond question

17:41 , Mike Jones

It is rare in the modern game that news completely stuns the football world but that’s exactly what happened with Jurgen Klopp’s resignation. There was shock among major European managers and players.

It is, with an odd sense of appropriateness, the modern equivalent of Bill Shankly retiring in 1974. That can’t quite feature the incredible clips of a successor to Tony Wilson literally informing Liverpool fans on the street that their patriarch had left. They will have no doubt checked their smartphones, given everyone in the Premier League was sharing the news with exclamation marks and emojis within seconds.

Unlike Shankly, too, many of the consequences are immediately apparent. This is a very different and more financially defined game.

No other English club ever – Jurgen Klopp vows not to manage Liverpool’s rivals

17:34 , Mike Jones

Jurgen Klopp has promised Liverpool fans he will never manage another English club after he leaves Anfield in the summer “even if he has nothing to eat”.

The 56-year-old German has shocked the football world by announcing he will stand down as Reds boss after nearly nine years in charge at the end of the season, having steered the club to six major trophies including the Premier League title in 2020 and the Champions League in 2019.

De Zerbi ‘sad’ about Klopp departure

17:27 , Mike Jones

Brighton boss, Roberto De Zerbi, is sad that Jurgen Klopp is leaving his post as Liverpool manager and claimed the German was one of the best managers in the world.

He said: “I’m very sad because, if he changes league, changes country, the Premier League loses one of the best coaches in the world.

“I consider Klopp, (Pep) Guardiola, (Carlo) Ancelotti, (Marcelo) Bielsa the best coaches in the world and I’m sad for it. I can understand it very well. I think our work is the best work you can do but it is very tough.

“You need energy. You have to push every day. If you don’t work with the right energy, you lose everything.”

Ruben Amorim

Another young coach making waves on the continent, Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim is regarded as a sharp tactical thinker.

His positive mindset has also drawn praise during his time in Lisbon, and a step up to a higher-profile job in the future feels a formality for the 38-year-old, who has time on his side.

Ange Postecoglou

Surely not? It seems unlikely that Ange Postecoglou will leave Tottenham after his early success in London but the Australian was a Liverpool fan growing up, and has made a success of virtually every role in a long and varied career.

Julian Nagelsmann

Now in charge of Germany, a jump to the Premier League has long been rumoured for managerial wunderkind Julian Nagelsmann.

Things turned a little sour towards the end of his stint at Bayern Munich but Nagelsmann was once European football’s hottest coaching commodity after success with Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig.

Steven Gerrard

There was a time where a return at Anfield seemed a certainty for ex-club captain Steven Gerrard, who guided Rangers to a Scottish league title after departing a role in Liverpool’s academy.

A difficult spell at Aston Villa has caused his managerial stock to fall, while the Saudi Pro League is not perhaps the place to rebuild a reputation, but Gerrard remains popular with the fanbase and impressed Klopp while in charge of Liverpool’s Under-18s.

Roberto De Zerbi

If Liverpool favour a manager familiar with the Premier League, Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi might fit the bill.

The Italian’s progressive coaching style has proved a neat fit on the South Coast, taking the club into Europe for the first time during his first campaign in charge.

The former Sassuolo and Shakhtar Donetsk manager has been praised by Klopp, and the two managers share a mutual respect for one another.

Here are some of the names who could be in the frame to replace Jurgen Klopp:

Xabi Alonso

The favourite for the role is Xabi Alonso, the former Liverpool midfielder who has done fine work with Bayer Leverkusen in Germany.

The 42-year-old is regarded as one of Europe’s most promising managers having impressed previously at Real Sociedad and taken Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga. He spent five years at Anfield during his playing career.

16:45 , Mike Jones

Shocked Liverpool fans have paid tribute to Jurgen Klopp after admitting that they are “gutted” that the manager will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

Klopp made the shock announcement on Friday morning (26 January) that his time at Anfield will come to an end at the conclusion of the campaign.

The German’s tenure has seen him build his side into regular title challengers, with Liverpool achieving a first Premier League triumph in 30 years in 2020, and winning every trophy available.

When will Jurgen Klopp’s last match as Liverpool manager be?

16:38 , Mike Jones

Liverpool’s last Premier League game of the season is on Sunday 19 May, at home to Wolves. This will be Klopp’s final game as Liverpool manager at Anfield.

There is the possibility that the Reds could end their campaign with two home games in a row. Their Carabao Cup final – against Chelsea on Sunday 25 February – means their home game against Luton Town still has to be rearranged.

The Reds are also involved in two other cup competitions: the Europa League and the FA Cup.

Should Klopp’s side go all the way in Europe, it could be the German’s final match in charge of Liverpool: the final will be on Wednesday 22 May in Dublin.

But if Liverpool reach the FA Cup final, that will be Klopp’s final game in charge of the club on Saturday 25 May 2024.

Jurgen Klopp defined Liverpool with energy – his ability to shock endures

16:31 , Mike Jones

Jurgen Klopp’s reign at Liverpool has been defined by the capacity for the stunning, so perhaps it is fitting that he saved the greatest shock until the end: or the news of the end, anyway.

Klopp’s statement that he will leave at the end of the season became the most unexpected development of all: bigger than the four-goal turnaround against Barcelona or the succession of late winners or even Alisson’s injury-time header against West Bromwich Albion.

A sudden announcement came amid a second quest for a quadruple in three seasons: Klopp will go with proof his powers remain intact, with Liverpool’s resurgence this season an illustration that he was building a second fine team, potentially a second brilliant one.

He will leave with Liverpool wanting more: perhaps that would always have been the case.

Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi spoke about Jurgen Klopp describing him as one of the best managers in the world before adding that he can understand the reasons behind the Liverpool boss stepping aside at the end of the campaign.

"You need energy," he said. "You have to push every day.

“You have to keep behaviour to improve every day. You can’t stop your improvement and studying the game and new coaches, development.

"If you don’t work with the right energy you lose everything. I like him because his energy, character... are great. If he changes country or league it is not a good thing."

Liverpool confirm stance on timescale to replace Jurgen Klopp as manager

16:17 , Mike Jones

Liverpool will begin the search for a replacement manager immediately, but have issued a clear notice that work will be done behind the scenes with no public updates, to avoid distracting the team as they challenge for major honours this season.

Jurgen Klopp earlier announced he would be stepping down as head coach at the end of the current campaign, two years before his contract is due to expire.

Shortly afterwards, it was confirmed that Jorg Schmadtke would also be leaving his role as sporting director, having only been appointed on a short-term deal in June, leaving a big turnover of senior staff for the Reds this summer.

Hogan on how they will celebrate Klopp: “I had a conversation with my son who said I thought he was going to manage forever.

“We’ll have the right time and opportunity to look back and his career and the ride we’ve been on is extraordinary, who he is as a person, his charisma, the team that’s been built here is a massive credit to him.

“We want to get through today and get back to playing and winning football matches.

When did Klopp know he would be leaving?

“It was pretty much that time, I knew last season. You might have the opportunity to look at when I arrived at the club and a picture now and say nine years, really?

“Because I’m the leading part in the meetings, I couldn’t [do it], that was the first moment. We still planned it, when the new manager comes it’s fine, we planned pre-season because we had to.

“But that was the moment I started thinking, the football we played got better and better and the potential of the team was more and more obvious, that was the moment, that with a proper push and a really good manager on top of his game, that will be fun to watch and I will do that.”

“The team Jurgen has built is an extremely strong one.”

Klopp added about his coaching staff: “I will take the break but the other boys are ready.

“The impact they had over the years, especially Pep [Ljinders], is second to none. I know that I have to be thankful and grateful to him. He gave me so many new visions and helped me to develop.

“They will all go for it and I will support and follow from where I am. I’ll enjoy it a lot because there is a lot to expect from them.”

Is there a chance Klopp could change his mind?

“My mind is always clear because of the good relationship at the club.” he said, “I have to make a decision at one point because no one else would.

“I always knew I would take that decision because I don’t just want to be hanging around. I have thought it through properly.

“I want to win everything this season and if we don’t win anything it won’t change my mind. It’s independent of results. The big one is the development of the team.

Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan on the decision-making process for Klopp’s successor: “I think from our perspective, I don’t want to set an expectation because it’s a process we will go through.

“The way we operate as a football club is to look at all the information, the data and with due diligence and then make our decision. I can’t put a time on it. It will happen behind the scenes. It’s not to be a distraction, it’s about the campaign continuing and the team continuing to perform.

“In this moment I love each minute. It’s just the stuff you have to do next to it which is really a lot. Like planning, the transfer windows, pre-seasons all these types of things.

“I’ve done six press conferences a week for nine years pretty much and I can’t wait for the moment I don’t have to do that anymore. You have to be pushing yourself, especially for a club like Liverpool because it’s so important for so many people, I can’t do it on three wheels, it’s not allowed and I never wanted to be a passenger in all of that.

“My managerial skills, there are so many better managers out there, but mine are based on energy on relationships and that takes all of you.

“I’m where I am because of who I am. If I can’t be that anymore it’s time to tell the people. I cannot be that anymore. I didn’t say it after one two three year four five, I didn’t say it.

Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan addressed the media about Klopp’s departure saying: “It’s hard to put into words how significant it is. When Jurgen joined in 2015 he spoke about leaving the club in a better place to how he found it

“If you look at where we are today there is no doubt he’s done that.

“The news is sad and I’m sure supporters share that emotion. We’ve had talks over the last few months and the first time we spoke a out it from professional and personal stand point, I can see from my perspective that it’s a decision he’s comfortable with. When you friend and colleague comes to a decision like that you respect it.

“I’m surprised in a sense but I understand it. It’s a sad day but a credit to Jurgen he’s come to a decision that allows the club to go through an orderly process. That’s not easy to do if this news isn’t public.

“We’ll go through the same process that brought us Jurgen almost nine years ago.

“We will do the process in private with, as Jurgen said, the ownership and when we have further news we can discuss it but it won’t be a running commentary. At this club we prefer to operate on speaking about things when we will. We won’t get into the name game.

“This is an announcement we and Jurgen are making and we’re focusing on the campaign and competing on four fronts to make the 2023/24 campaign one supporters can look back on with enjoyment.”

Klopp was asked whether he will have a choice in his successor and replied: “No why should i?

“In this world we have a few faces, managers of the club and others you don’t see often. It looks like I do all the work, I don’t, I can’t. That means what we built over the last eight and a half years is a strong structure behind the scenes, everything goes in the same direction. It’s one of the reasons I can leave.

“My responsibility was so big, I wanted to put things in place to make this club get stronger and stronger. We did that to perfection No, but as good as we could.

“The last thing they need is advice from the old man on his way out. For the future I wish them the best. For now I’m still here and can help them achieve the best things possible.”

“The players didn’t have a lot of questions. I spoke to the players all together then I spoke to a few after that. We have a really strong bond, a really strong bond so they didn’t ask questions.

“The agreement you have with the team on both sides is we agree for a year, after that anything can happen with a manager. We are completely in that year and the boys are. They see it like that too.

“We are professionals, the boys are in a really good mood. It was just an announcement, it’s different to other situations usually a manager saying that in a dressing is because he got sacked.

“Beacuse of all the things we achieved with each other I’m always having to review is it still right? Many managers would have got the sack last season but there was never any intention to do that.

“I knew I would have to say when it’s not right any more.

“People from the outside who are not with us might be happy. The distractions come from the outside. We will not let distractions happen. If we want we can grow even more together to squeeze everything out of the season.

“There are no guarantees that we will win anything but the fact I said I won’t be manager next season doesn’t mean we will fight less.

“We will be completely in it and fight. I will be here 100%. I just know I can’t do the job in the future but I will do it very well right now.”

What were your emotions in coming to the decision?

Klopp replied:

“The relief was there when I made the decision for myself. That was another thing I realised, I didn’t know that would be the case. Today it is mixed but I’m not as emotional as I will be when it comes to an end point.

“The two most important things I had to do, after telling the owenrs of course, was to tell our supporters and our players. I don’t know 100% the reaction of the supporters but the reaction of the players was top. It was really good, we’ve known each other so long they know I don’t say things like that and walk away.

“I am here and I am fully here. Until the end of the season, we have so much to do, I am fully in that. It’s just the right thing to do and I’m convinced in the right moment because the club needs time to sort the future while we are sorting the present.”

More from Klopp: “We’re not young rabbits any more and we don’t jump as high as we did. I didn’t purposefully start thinking about it [leaving Liverpool], it just happened and when I though more about it I just knew.

“This team we have with all the super things we have in this club, they need a manager at the top of his game and top level. I can’t be there any more. The alternative is I go into next season and I have to try and get through it, that’s not how it should be.

“First I told the club about my decision and then I told the coaches my decision and staff and since today everyone knows it.

“That I love everything so much and everyone believes that to be the case. I still think it’s the right thing to do. I don’t take these things lightly. I’m convinced it’s right.”

Here’s what Jurgen Klopp said to answer why now was the time to leave: “With all the responsibility you have in this job you have to be at the top of your which I am.

“I have been doing this for 24 years now and when you’ve had the career I’ve had, it’s pretty much impossible to start where I started and arrive at Liverpool. If it becomes possible it’s because you invested absolutely everything you had and that’s what I always did.

“I realised that my resources are not endless and I preferred to put everything into this season and have a break or have to stop.”

Departing Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is about to start a press conference ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup tie against Norwich.

Some of the focus will be on the match but most of the questions will concern Klopp’s recently announced departure from the club as the German will leave Liverpool at the end of the season.

Let’s see what he has to say.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher hopes Jurgen Klopp can “go out with a bang” after the German manager announced he will leave the club at the end of the season.

The 56-year-old has admitted he is “running out of energy” having led the club to six major trophies since taking charge in October 2015.

Carragher, who made 737 appearances for the Reds, posted on X, formerly Twitter: “This news was always going to be a body blow to the club whenever it came.

“I just thought it would be another few years away. What a manager, what a man, let’s go out with a bang Jurgen!”

Klopp’s message to Liverpool supporters

14:53 , Mike Jones

“The message to supporters: I really would like you to accept the decision,” said Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp.

“That would be nice. And then if I can ask for one more thing, after telling you don’t sing my song too early, after telling you be loud in the stadium, stuff like this, if I could ask you for one more thing it would be: don’t make these games about me, because there’s no need.

“The only thing I always wanted was the full support for the team, it’s not for me. I know about our relationship, I don’t need any kind of proof.

“We will have a moment, maybe the last matchday here or somewhere else – I mean in other countries or other competitions. There’s enough time to do these kinds of things. Let’s now really go for it.

“The outside world want to use this decision, laugh about it, want to disturb us. We are Liverpool, we went through harder things together. And you went through harder things before me.

“Let’s make a strength of it. That would be really cool. Let’s squeeze everything out of this season and have another thing to smile about when we look back in the future. Thank you.”

Jurgen Klopp, who took over from Brendan Rodgers, in October 2015, has won every club trophy possible during his time at Liverpool but is standing down in the summer as manager, explaining his decision to supporters in a 25-minute interview on the club website.

“It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy,” he said. “I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now.

“I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.

“After the years we had together and after all the time we spent together and after all the things we went through together, the respect grew for you, the love grew for you and the least I owe you is the truth – and that is the truth. That’s it, pretty much.”

Jurgen Klopp’s honours as Liverpool manager

Jurgen Klopp has announced he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, a moment which will bring to an end another successful chapter in the club’s history.

Klopp arrived at Anfield late in 2015, tasked with bringing trophies back to the club. Here’s what he won:

2019 – Uefa Super Cup

Another final, another penalty shoot-out win over Chelsea, this one coming in Istanbul after a 2-2 draw following extra time between the winners of the Champions and Europa Leagues. Mane scored a brace in the match, before Tammy Abraham’s missed penalty gave Liverpool the title.

2019 – Club World Cup

Roberto Firmino ensured Klopp was able to end 2019 with three non-domestic trophies, with the Club World Cup going alongside the Super Cup and Champions League. The Brazilian scored an injury-time winner in a 2-1 semi-final win over Monterrey in Qatar, before his extra-time winner saw off Flamengo to win the final 1-0.

Jurgen Klopp has announced he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, a moment which will bring to an end another successful chapter in the club’s history.

Klopp arrived at Anfield late in 2015, tasked with bringing trophies back to the club. Here’s what he won:

2018/19 – Champions League

This one ranks alongside the 2020 Premier League as Klopp’s crowing glory; a sixth European title for Liverpool coming thanks to a 2-0 win over Tottenham in an all-English final played in Madrid.

Liverpool booked their place in the final with an improbable come-from-behind semi-final win over Lionel Messi’s all-conquering Barcelona team, while on the night goals from Mo Salah and Divock Origi earned them the Champions League title.

The Reds enjoyed great success and consistency in the competition under Klopp too, being losing finalists in 2018 and 2022, while they were also runners-up in the 2016 Europa League.

Jurgen Klopp has announced he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, a moment which will bring to an end another successful chapter in the club’s history.

Klopp arrived at Anfield late in 2015, tasked with bringing trophies back to the club. Here’s what he won:

2021/22 – FA Cup

Liverpool’s run to the final saw them beat Shrewsbury, Cardiff, Norwich and Nottingham Forest, before an all-the-more difficult semi-final assignment against Manchester City. Two goals from Sadio Mane secured a somewhat unexpected win, before beating Chelsea 6-5 on penalties in the final.

2021/22 – League Cup

Beating Chelsea on penalties in the FA Cup final may have felt familiar to Klopp as some three months earlier his side had done the same thing to beat the same opposition and win the League Cup.

This time it was a lengthier shoot-out, going all the way to the goalkeepers, with Liverpool’s regular reserve, Caoimhin Kelleher, scoring the decisive penalty for an 11-10 success.

2022 – Community Shield

Liverpool’s FA Cup success meant another showdown with Manchester City, this time in the Community Shield, a match played at Leicester due to the Women’s Euro 2022 final at Wembley.

Big-money summer signing Darwin Nunez capped a 3-1 victory and another piece of silverware for Klopp, whose men ran out 3-1 winners.

Jurgen Klopp has announced he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, a moment which will bring to an end another successful chapter in the club’s history.

Klopp arrived at Anfield late in 2015, tasked with bringing trophies back to the club. Here’s what he won:

2019/20 – Premier League

Perhaps the one which matters the most to Liverpool fans, Klopp returned the first league title in 30 years as his side finished 17 points clear of Manchester City.

The sadness for the supporters was that, as it came during lockdown, no fans were present in the stadium to celebrate the success, which was confirmed when nearest rivals City lost at Chelsea. Klopp’s men won 32 of their 38 games that season.

Six appearances, five trophies. It has become the stuff of legends at Anfield – or at least of infamy, hilarity and a lesson in perfect timing – but the modern-day second-choice goalkeeper at Liverpool contributes an awful lot more than Pegguy Arphexad did during his silverware-laden spell in the early 2000s.

Back then, the understudy to Sander Westerveld joined just as the Reds embarked on a regular cup-winning spree and was pretty much on the bench throughout, including most of the cup runs, playing mainly early-round games against the likes of FC Haka, Stoke and Ipswich. He does, however, have one crossover point with the current second choice between the sticks, Caoimhin Kelleher: League Cup fixtures against Chelsea.

For Arphexad, his debut came in a 2-1 extra-time win over the Blues, in a third-round clash at Anfield. For the Irishman, it was somewhat later in the same competition: the final at Wembley in 2022, where he kept a clean sheet, scored a penalty and helped his side win silverware.

Klopp’s Liverpool legacy

14:09 , Mike Jones

Since taking over as Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp added a Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League to their trophy cabinet as well as a Uefa Super Cup and an inaugural Club World Cup.

The Reds have reached the Carabao Cup final this season and are still competing for the Premier League, Europa League and FA Cup so there is a strong chance the German can still add to that tally.

If he can lead the side to success in the Europa League, he’ll have won every available trophy as manager of Liverpool.

Erik ten Hag: “It’s no good for the Premier League. He built the club, he brought the club back where they belong. He has done an amazing job in Liverpool.”

On Klopp saying fatigue was a factor: “I can understand that. Nine years is a long time. The Premier League is very intense, in combination with European football, and nine years is a long period. I can understand that he is running out of energy.”

Reactions pour in as Jurgen Klopp announces Liverpool exit this summer

Marco Silva on Klopp’s impending exit: “A big surprise for all of us. Almost eight years and 500 games, and it’s been a big success. A really nice guy and I wish him all the best.”

Silva coached Everton in their Merseyside derbies against Liverpool and Klopp from the start of the 2018/19 season until midway through the next term.

The Spaniard is currently the head coach of Fulham, whom Liverpool edged out in the Carabao Cup semi-finals this month. A second-leg draw this week carried the Reds past Fulham and into next month’s final, where Chelsea await – in a rematch of the 2022 showpiece game.

Liverpool have no successor lined up for Jurgen Klopp, per report

13:41 , Alex Pattle

Sam Wallace of The Telegraph has reported: “Liverpool have no successor lined up for Jürgen Klopp - although there are [obvious] contenders.

“Process will be run from now, [including] appointing new sporting director.

“- [There was] no ‘good time’ to make announcement.

“- Klopp believes ‘2.0’ team leaves strong legacy.”

The consequences of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool departure

More from Miguel Delaney:

“Who will now come in?

“This is the most profound effect of Klopp’s resignation. He leaves a huge vacuum, that was filled by much more than that outsized personality. The modern game, already dispiritingly narrow at the very top end, has for the moment lost a substantial force. A club now needs a revenue of at least £400m to even compete and the few that can manage that then need someone mercurial to turn that money into the silver of trophies. Klopp was that.

“That does lead into more substantial immediate questions. What will he do this season?”

Here is our Chief Football Writer, Miguel Delaney, on Klopp’s announcement today...

“It is rare in the modern game that news completely stuns the football world but that’s exactly what happened with Jurgen Klopp’s resignation. There was shock among major European managers and players.

“It is, with an odd sense of appropriateness, the modern equivalent of Bill Shankly retiring in 1974. That can’t quite feature the incredible clips of a successor to Tony Wilson literally informing Liverpool fans on the street that their patriarch had left. They will have no doubt checked their smartphones, given everyone in the Premier League was sharing the news with exclamation marks and emojis within seconds.

“Unlike Shankly, too, many of the consequences are immediately apparent. This is a very different and more financially defined game.

“European football has, for the time being, lost the greatest counterweight to the continent’s current champions and most dominant team. Klopp is not just the only manager to have won Liverpool a title since their glory era. He is the only manager to have got close to Manchester City’s levels in England. His Liverpool are the only other team to get past 90 points since Pep Guardiola started winning titles and he did it three times.”

Xabi Alonso, the current favourite to succeed Klopp at Anfield, has just said at a Bayer Leverkusen press conference:

“Speculation is normal, my focus is here on Bayer Leverkusen.

“I am very happy at Leverkusen with my players at the moment.

“Big surprise in Liverpool, of course. For what Jurgen did in Liverpool, I have great respect and admiration.”

Jurgen Klopp to become next Germany head coach?

13:21 , Alex Pattle

It is worth saying, while considering the tweet below, that Klopp said earlier: “If you ask me, ‘Will you ever work as a manager again?’ I would say now, ‘No,’ but I don’t know obviously how that will feel, because I never had the situation.

“What I know definitely: I will never, ever manage a different club in England than Liverpool, 100 per cent. That’s not possible. My love for this club, my respect for the people is too big. I couldn’t. I couldn’t for a second think about it. There’s no chance.

“This is part of my life, we are part of the family, we feel home here. There’s no chance to do that. But all the rest, will I ever work again? Of course, I know myself, I cannot just sit around. I will find something else maybe to do. But I will not manage a club or a country at least for a year, that’s not possible, I cannot do that and I don’t want to.”

A reminder of some key points from Klopp earlier:

“It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.”

When pressed on those comments, the German said: “I am OK. I am healthy, as much as you can [be] at my age. Little bits and bobs, stuff like that, but nothing anybody has to be concerned about, so that’s absolutely fine.

“I told the club already in November. I have to explain a little bit that maybe the job I do people see from the outside, I’m on the touchline and in training sessions and stuff like this, but the majority of all the things happen around these kind of things.

“That means a season starts and you plan pretty much the next season already. When we sat there together talking about potential signings, the next summer camp and can we go wherever, the thought came up, ‘I am not sure I am here then anymore,’ and I was surprised myself by that.”

Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic: “Jurgen Klopp is an outstanding person. I was lucky enough to get to know him here. He has shaped our club and Liverpool like no other. I am sure that there will be another station in his coaching life, there will be a place where he will do a similarly good job.”

Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel: “I have to digest that first, I can't say anything at the moment. Kloppo is one of the very best coaches in the world, he has always managed to influence the clubs where he worked. It’s big news.”

Former Liverpool player and manager Graeme Souness: “I’m amazed, I just think the demands of that job, it’s one of the best jobs in the world if you get it right and he has done that. It would appear he has got a team again, but it’s just the toll it takes on the individual.

“When I look at Jurgen Klopp, he is such a perfect fit for Liverpool ‘cause he is on it, he’s at it. He’s aggressive, he’s emotional and confrontational, but that takes a toll. The pressures of being a manager at a big football club are enormous.”

Former Liverpool midfielder Ray Houghton: “I didn’t think I was going to hear it today, to be honest. I was at the midweek game. I’ve got to tell you, he was fist-pumping with the fans, he joined in with the fans.

“What he’s done for this club and his time being in charge, [it’s] nothing short of phenomenal: to get them back winning the league, getting them to major finals, getting that pride back in the football club, the joy of playing for Liverpool.”

Former Arsenal and England midfielder Paul Merson: “Wow! I know legend is used loosely [lightly], but he will go down as a Liverpool legend! What a manager and will be missed big time by Liverpool and the Premier League.”

BREAKING: Liverpool sporting director Jorg Schmadtke will also leave – this week

12:07 , Alex Pattle

A further statement from Liverpool FC:

“Liverpool FC can confirm Jorg Schmadtke’s tenure as sporting director will come to an end following the culmination of the January transfer window.

Schmadtke joined the Reds last June, overseeing the club’s football operations department and leading on incoming and outgoing transfers, having previously performed a similar role at Wolfsburg, Cologne, Hannover and Alemannia Aachen.

Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon said: ‘We would like to place on record our gratitude to Jorg for the important role he has played since joining Liverpool last summer.

‘He has made a valuable contribution, both in terms of the support he provided to Jürgen Klopp and the assistance and guidance given to our outstanding football operations department.

‘As well as departing with our appreciation for his efforts, we would also like to take this opportunity to offer Jorg and his family our very best wishes for the future.’

Schmadtke said: ‘Liverpool is a very special club so to have had the opportunity to work here has been a huge honour for me, even though I knew from the outset that it would only be for a short period.

‘I would like to thank everyone – the owners, manager, staff, players and fans – for the support I have been given and offer my best wishes for the rest of this season.’”

Jurgen Klopp’s brilliant Borussia Dortmund spell

It can’t be overstated how impressive Klopp’s time at Dortmund was, especially considering how dominant Bayern Munich had been – and have been since.

It is also strange to think back to the day he signed with Liverpool, after seven years at Dortmund, and to realise he has been at Anfield for even longer.

Time flies.

Jurgen Klopp: From Mainz to Liverpool

11:49 , Alex Pattle

Klopp’s managerial career began at Mainz in 2001, shortly after he retired from playing for the club – which sat in the 2 Bundesliga at the time.

In 2003/04, Klopp secured promotion with Mainz, and he would later move to Borussia Dortmund in 2008/09. There, in a seven-year spell, he won the Bundesliga twice (2011, 2012) and the Pokal once (2012).

Klopp also won the German Super Cup with Dortmund twice (2013, 2014).

Furthermore, Klopp led Dortmund to runners-up finishes in the Champions League in 2013 and the Pokal in 2014 and 2015.

Jurgen Klopp’s potential successors at Liverpool next season

11:33 , Alex Pattle

The shock news that Jurgen Klopp will step down as Liverpool manager at the end of the season leaves the Anfield club seeking a successor for the German.

Klopp’s nine-year tenure in charge has seen him transform Liverpool into consistent title challengers, guiding them to Premier League and Champions League triumphs. Their 2019/20 domestic triumph was a first league title for 30 years.

Filling Klopp’s shoes will be a tough task, but there a number of intriguing candidates to succeed him. Assistant Pep Lijnders, thought by some to be a successor in waiting, has also confirmed that he will be leaving the club to pursue his own managerial ambitions.

Here are some of the names who could be in the frame to replace Klopp...

As well as the trophies mentioned in that last post, Liverpool are very much in the Premier League title race this season, and this week they sealed a spot in the Carabao Cup final – where Chelsea await.

The Reds remain in the Europa League, too.

In fact, in Klopp’s first season at Anfield, he guided the team to the final of the Europa League and Carabao Cup, only to lose both matches.

His other runners-up finishes with Liverpool include the Champions League in 2018 (a year before the German finally got his hands on the trophy) and in 2022. Both defeats came by Real Madrid.

Liverpool have also finished second in the Premier League twice under Klopp, coming so close on both occasions – losing by one point both times.

Klopp joined Liverpool in October 2015, replacing Brendan Rodgers, having left Borussia Dortmund a few months earlier.

After steadily building his own squad, his first trophy with the Reds came in 2019, when they won the Champions League with a victory over Tottenham. Later that year, Klopp guided Liverpool to the Super Cup and Club World Cup.

A season later, the German helped to end the club’s 30-year wait for a Premier League title.

In 2021/2022, Klopp and Liverpool achieved a domestic-cup double, beating Chelsea on penalties in both the FA and Carabao Cup finals.

Later that year, they also won the Community Shield.
