How Jon Scheyer used the Duke basketball 'X' account this week to prank longtime friend

Zach Kelly has been on the receiving end of many Jon Scheyer pranks.

For the second time in 14 years, Duke basketball's head coach got his high school teammate in the form of a Tweet.

The latest gag fell into Scheyer's hands last weekend as the Blue Devils played their first two rounds of the NCAA tournament in Brooklyn, N.Y., where Kelly lives and works in finance.

Kelly, whose house is just down the street from Barclays Center, came to the tournament to support his longtime friend during Duke's second round 93-55 win Sunday against James Madison.

Shortly after Jared McCain hit a fast break 3-pointer to put the Blue Devils ahead 66-39, CBS cameras panned to the crowd to find Kelly searching for someone—anyone—to give him a high five.

He was rejected by unaware Duke fans—some of which were family of Scheyer—who were too busy themselves celebrating to notice Kelly's hand raised high begging for contact.

"What are the chances that the camera would be on me at the same time?" Kelly said. "Go figure."

Scheyer soon found the clip of his former Glenbrook North teammate and pounced, according to Kelly.

Monday night at 10:18 p.m., Duke basketball's official account tweeted out the short video of Kelly searching for a high-five companion with the caption 'Gotta make some more 3’s in Dallas so my guy can get a (high five emoji) back," followed by a laughing emoji and umbrella emoji.

As of Thursday morning it has nearly 41,000 views and more than 660 likes.

"He more than approved (the Tweet)—this was all him," Kelly said of Scheyer. "Don’t be mistaken. He gets a lot of joy out of pranks. Obviously, he didn’t coordinate this one as much, and I was hoping he wouldn’t see it. But sure enough he did, and I knew if he did he’d get way too much satisfaction out of it. And he has."

Duke's offensive outburst on Saturday had Blue Devil faithful excited, and Kelly admits he was caught up in the moment when cameras found him in the midst of the celebration.

"I’ve never been a Duke fan, per se, but I always wanted to support my friend," he said. "I usually don’t get that excited, but it just seemed like the game, everything was going right, and it was one of the more fun games I’ve been at in a while. I think excitement got the best of me."

The victory advances fourth-seeded Duke to a Sweet 16 matchup Friday night in Dallas against No. 1-seeded Houston.

Kelly received unwanted notoriety in 2010 after Scheyer pulled an instantly regrettable prank that haunts Kelly to this day.

After winning the national championship as a Duke player, Scheyer tweeted a phone number he claimed was his and asked people to give him a shout out.

The number, in fact, belonged to Kelly.

His phone blew up for days. He occasionally receives texts these days from people believing they're reaching out to Duke's head coach.

"I usually get a handful of texts each year with people thinking I’m him," Kelly said, "because, for some reason, that number is still tied in with a bunch of out-of-touch folks. I got one after the last game that said ‘hey, congrats coach.’"

Kelly, who won a pair of Division III national titles while playing at Washington University in St. Louis, says the pair don't talk often in the meat of Duke's schedule, but Scheyer was quick to give him a call after seeing the clip.

"During the season we get busy and don’t communicate as much," Kelly said. "But when things like this happen, he’s more than ready to communicate pretty quickly. He sometimes tries to coordinate these pranks to make them happen, this one fell in his lap and he went the extra step in promoting it."

As for how he'll get Scheyer back, well, Duke's head man can be quite elusive.

"He’s pretty good at avoiding it," Kelly said, "but we’ll get him one of these days."
