Former Aston Villa and Chelsea defender John Terry is set to retire from football and has a choice between taking up a role at Sky Sports or turning to management.

Terry left Aston Villa following their failure to beat Fulham in the Championship play-off final, meaning they face at least one more season out of the Premier League.

He has had offers from around the world to earn one last bumper payday at the age of 37 before turning his attention elsewhere in the game, but he looks set to reject the chance.

An injection of money from new part-owners has not tempted back to Villa Park, and according to The Sunday Mirror, Terry will retire from playing.

After the departure of Thierry Henry from the Sky Sports studio, the network wants to recruit a new star name, and Terry fits the bill with experience of international football and winning both the Premier League and Champions League in his time at Chelsea.

His former teammate Frank Lampard has taken up a managerial role at Derby County, and his England pal Steven Gerrard is in charge at Rangers in the SPL. While Terry is considering a move upstairs, he is also prepared to take a sabbatical until the right role comes along, something that gives Sky Sports an edge.

Were he to become a pundit, he would fill in alongside former England international colleagues Jamie Carragher – making his way back from suspension – and Gary Neville, Sky’s most prominent pundit.
