John Sutherland fouls out as Beavers drop tilt with Winona State

Feb. 23—WINONA — The Bemidji State men's basketball team was without one of its best players down the stretch on Friday night in Winona.

Facing Winona State on the road, the Beavers had to play the last five minutes of the game without star forward John Sutherland, who fouled out with 4:56 to go. BSU trailed 71-69 at that point, and it couldn't get over the hump in a 87-81 loss.

Sutherland was saddled with foul trouble throughout, playing just 24 minutes. Without him, BSU (13-14, 9-12 NSIC) couldn't keep up, quickly falling behind by six points after his departure and never getting closer than four the rest of the way.

Winona State (18-9, 13-8 NSIC) scored 48 points in the second and pulled away at the end. Bemidji State received double-figure scoring from BJ Davis (17), Dalton Albrecht (16), Brayden Williams (16) and Tate Olson (13), but it wasn't enough to counteract WSU's output.

The Warriors also had four double-figure scorers and were led by Connor Dillon with 30 points. Olumide Adelodun added 20.
