John Ross, ex-Bengals first-rounder drafted one pick before Patrick Mahomes, eyes comeback

Wide receiver John Ross III, the Cincinnati Bengals' first-round draft pick (ninth overall) in the 2017 NFL Draft, will participate in the Philadelphia Eagles' rookie camp on a tryout basis, according to a report Sunday from NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

The Kansas City Chiefs placed Ross on the reserve/retired list last July.

Ross hasn't played in the NFL since the 2021 season, when he had 11 receptions for 224 yards with a touchdown in 10 games for the New York Giants.

Ross signed with the Giants in March 2021 after the Bengals declined to pick up his fifth-year option. He requested a trade in October 2020.

Over four seasons in Cincinnati, Ross had 51 catches for 733 yards with 10 touchdowns.

The Bengals selected Ross, who ran a 40-yard dash in 4.22 seconds at the NFL Combine, one pick before the Chiefs drafted quarterback Patrick Mahomes in 2017, and three picks before the Houston Texans selected Deshaun Watson. The Pittsburgh Steelers selected linebacker T.J. Watt 30th.
