Jimmies offense explodes in doubleheader sweep against Mayville

Sep. 18—JAMESTOWN — The University of Jamestown's offense came out to play in the first game of a doubleheader against Mayville State University as they scored 15 runs on their way to a 15-6 win on Monday, Sept. 18, at Jack Brown Stadium.

The Jimmies' 15 runs are the most they've put up in a game since they scored 15 runs against Dakota Wesleyan on April 29, 2023.

The Jimmies took advantage of sloppy play from the Comets as 10 of their 15 runs were unearned.

The Jimmies opened the scoring in the third when they scored four runs on three hits and an error to make it 4-0. The Jimmies added on in the fourth when they tacked on seven runs on four hits and one error to make it 11-0.

The Jimmies appeared to be well on their way to a blowout win from there scoring two more runs in the fifth before the Comets had other ideas in the sixth when they loaded the bases for Michael Feralio who hit a two-run single to cut the deficit to 11-2. They added three more runs in the inning to make it 11-5. However, the Jimmies immediately responded when Payton Smith hit an RBI single and Jett Nelson finished his huge first game with an RBI double to make it 15-5.

In total, Nelson went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and one run.

The Jimmies' offense did not slow down in the second game as they scored 12 runs on their way to a 12-2 win over the Comets. The Jimmies' 27 runs are the most they've had in a doubleheader since they scored 29 runs against Midland University on April 1, 2023.

"I felt like we had a chance to be really good offensively but today is the first day that we showed that," Jimmies head coach Tom Hager said. "We strung a lot of quality at-bats together. So, we got a lot of guys up and down our lineup but today we were clicking."

The win means the Jimmies are 4-0 for the first time since the 2017-18 season when they started the year 10-0.

The Jimmies opened the scoring in the second when Alva tripled home two runs to put the Jimmies up 2-0. The Jimmies (4-0) added one in the third to take a 3-0 lead before putting the game away in the fourth. The loudest hit in the fourth came when Hayden Brown hit the first pitch he saw off the scoreboard in center field to push the lead out to 9-1. That was part of a six-run frame for the hosts.

The Jimmies were not done there as they added three more in the sixth to take a 12-1 lead. The Comets (0-3) scored on a sacrifice groundout in the sixth to cut the deficit to 12-2 but that would be as close as they would get.

The Jimmies showed off their depth as a unit as they played 23 total players in the two games. 11 different Jimmies hitters had hits in the two games including Ryan Muizelaar who went a combined 4-for-5 with one RBI, four runs and one stolen base.

"I've been a little bit out in front the last couple days," Muizelaar said. "So, the first few swings were all opposite-field singles and found a groove."

The offense was not the only side of the ball to play well for the Jimmies as the team's two starting pitchers, Ryan Radkey and Jack Howard both pitched well in their first career Jimmies starts. In the first game, Radkey went five innings giving up two hits, zero runs and zero walks, while striking out four. In the second game, Howard went 4.2 giving up one run on four hits, while striking out six hitters and walking two.

"We got a chance to see a lot of different guys today, in the field, at the plate and also on the mound," Hager said. "We're trying to continue to learn about them and one of the things we learned today is we have a lot of guys that got the job done."

The Jimmies are back in action at 6 p.m. on Sept. 20, when they take on Valley City State University.
