Jimmies men's hoops pull away late in 80-63 win at Doane

Jan. 21—CRETE, Neb. — The University of Jamestown had four of their five starters in double digits and held Doane University to only three double-digit scorers in an 80-63 win on Friday, Jan. 20, at the Haddix Recreation and Athletic Center.

The Jimmies were led by Mason Walters' 22 points followed by Cole Woodford's 20, Will Cordes' 16 and Marc Kjos' 12. The Tigers' three double-digit scorers were Brady Timm with 19, Cooper Sheldon with 11, and Alec Oberhauser with 10.

The Tigers (8-12, 5-7) sprinted out to a 6-0 lead forcing the Jimmies to use a timeout just over a minute into the game. Out of the timeout, the Jimmies' Cole Woodford knocked down a three to cut the deficit to 6-3. The Jimmies managed to take their first lead of the game at 13-12. The Jimmies' Colby Vazquez hit a jumper to push his team in front 18-16 with 10:06 to go in the first half. That started a run that saw the Jimmies stretch the lead out to 29-23 over the next five minutes.

Over the last five minutes of the first half, the Jimmies went on a 10-2 run to go into the half up 39-25.

The Jimmies picked up right where they left off early in the second half as they stretched the lead out to 54-35 over the course of the first nine minutes. With 11:13 to go in the game, Timm converted the and-one to cut his team's deficit to 54-38, which kickstarted a 4-0 run bringing the deficit to 54-46. But the Jimmies would not let the Tigers get any closer stretching the lead out to as much as 24 points in the second half.

The Jimmies are back in action at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, when they go to Hastings.
