Jimmies held to scoreless draw against Midland

Sep. 16—JAMESTOWN — Despite nerve-wracking moments for both the University of Jamestown and Midland University's backline, neither offense was able to find the back of the net in a 0-0 tie on Thursday, Sept. 15, at the Jimmie Turf Field.

Early in the match, the Warriors had a chance to break through when Henry Hernandez took a shot but it went wide. The Jimmies' best chance of the early going came when Jack Crombie took a shot from distance that sailed wide with 36 minutes to go in the first half. A few minutes later, the Jimmies' Matt Webb got in on goal but a last-ditch tackle from Hernandez kept the game scoreless. The Jimmies kept the pressure up as late in the first half, Axcele Biteghe sent in a pass to Crombie who sent a missile destined for the back of the net but the Warriors goalie Marco Moresco was able to make the save.

Jimmies forward Austin Shafer only last 18 minutes in this game, which is a season-low for the Jamestown native. Jimmies head coach Connor Campbell said the Warriors were game planning to try to get Shafer out of the game as quickly as possible.

"They injured our striker in the first five minutes, and that was something they were clearly, not necessarily trying to hurt him but try to foul him," Campbell said. "He got fouled three times before he ended up having to come out. They were trying to stall anything that they could which was threatening which was smart. For us, we ended up in our end a decent amount, which isn't a bad thing, it's just we need to progress from that."

The Warriors got a chance midway through the second half when they had a wide-open net when a Mateo Salazar punch attempt pulled him out of position but the Jimmies were able to clear it out of danger. The Warriors' bench deflated late in the game when they had a header sail wide.

The Jimmies finished the match with two shots on goal while the Warriors finished with three shots on goal. Jimmies goalie Mateo Salazar was making his first start of the season and he stood up to the pressure saving all three shots he faced. Salazar said he was motivated by his family and friends watching him on the Jimmies stream.

The Jimmies are back in action at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, when they host Morningside University.
