Jets' Holmes unsure when he'll play

Santonio Holmes isn't certain to play in the Sept. 8 season opener for the New York Jets against former teammate Darrelle Revis and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In fact, Holmes can't say when he'll play again.

Coach Rex Ryan said Holmes is ready conditioning-wise, but the troublesome foot injury that first put the wide receiver on the sidelines 11 months ago remains an issue.

Holmes hasn't participated in any portion of training camp. While he has plenty of experience working with quarterback Mark Sanchez, Holmes has never worked with rookie Geno Smith, who is ticketed to start this week's preseason game against the New York Giants.

"I don't know ... I don't know," Holmes said of the possibility of missing multiple games or even the entire 2013 season. "I don't know how to answer that question as far as missing the whole season. I have 16 weeks of football. At any point I could be ready to play. If not, I would be willing to accept it."

Holmes believes he can play if he learns to tolerate the discomfort, but at what level is an unknown.

"If I felt as good as I looked, I'd definitely be 100 percent," Holmes said.
