Jeremiah Gutjahr Called Up To USA U-20 National Team
IU sophomore midfielder Jeremiah Gutjahr is heading back to represent his country.
Gutjahr, a Bloomington native, was named to the U-20 United States Men's National Team on Tuesday. He is one of 24 players on the roster as the Americans prepare for the 2017 Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football U-20 Championships.
Should he and his teammates play well, there's a chance Gutjahr winds up playing for the 2017 FIFA U-20 Men's World Cup in South Korea this May.
“It’s a great honor to be selected to compete for the U.S. National Team,” IU head coach Todd Yeagley said in a press release. “Jeremiah has worked hard for this opportunity. He is developing very well and we are excited to see the impact Jeremiah will have on IU soccer and our national team programs in the years ahead.”
Gutjahr is not stranger to playing for the U-20 National Team, most recently playing in the fall of 2015. As a sophomore last fall, he played in 20 games for the Hoosiers, making 11 starts and recording one goal and one assist.
Training camp began Tuesday and runs until Feb. 10 in Orlando, Florida. Once the 11 days are complete, head coach Tab Tamos will narrow his squad to 20 available players to compete in upcoming CONCACAF matches in San Jose, Costa Rica, scheduled for Feb. 17.
“Our objective for this camp is to continue our preparation for the U-20 World Cup qualifiers,” Ramos said in a statement released by U.S. soccer. “After having a fitness camp followed by a camp with a combination of fitness and local games, now we are looking to get into game rhythm and select the final roster.”
