Jenks explodes into Primus Moore Invite semis

Jan. 4—The Lady Buffs started their home tournament with a statement.

McAlester faced off against Muskogee Thursday in the opening round of the Primus Moore Invitational at the McAlester Activity Center, where the Lady Buffs left not doubt in the 75-56 win to advance to the semifinals.

Points from Tori Kilburn and Madi VanDorpe got the Lady Buffs moving early, jumping out into a 6-0 lead. Muskogee answered with points from Malaysia Burton, but McAlester struck right back with the tandem of Kilburn and VanDorpe putting the Lady Buffs up 17-6 after the opening quarter.

In the second quarter, the Lady Roughers looked to chip away at the deficit with a run sparked by Aniyah Thomas. The Lady Buffs didn't relent, using points from Rylan Lesnau, Kayla Johnson, and VanDorpe to lead 40-17 at the half.

The Lady Roughers exploded out of the locker room, rattling off an 11-2 run Thomas, Asia Ivy, and D'Mya Brown to begin the third period. But the Lady Buffs finished the period strong in response, using points from Avery Alberson and Katie Allen on the way to a 57-34 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

There, the Lady Buffs hung tough and worked their way to the basket. Indya Hishaw and Allen earned three-points plays, with VanDorpe, Kilburn and Beaudee Nystrom adding in buckets as well to help seal away the win.

VanDorpe led the Lady Buffs with 21 points, followed by Kilburn with 19 points, Nystrom with 15 points, Allen with seven points, Lesnau with four points, and Alberson, Johnson, and Hishaw with three points each.

Burton led the Lady Roughers with 20 points, followed by Brown with 13 points, Thomas with 11 points, Ivy with nine points, Jordan Campbell with two points, and Jayda Wordlow with a free throw.

McAlester will advance to the semifinals to face Will Rogers at 7 p.m., while Muskogee will face Shawnee in the consolation semifinal at 10 a.m.

WILL ROGERS 48, SHAWNEE 44 (2OT)

Shawnee faced off against Will Rogers in the opening round of the Primus Moore Invitational, where the Lady Ropers edged the Lady Wolves 48-44 in double overtime.

Both teams began the game trading scores, refusing to relent. As they battled down the stretch, it'd be the Lady Wolves holding the narrow 16-15 lead at the break.

On the other side of the locker room visit, the Lady Ropers and Lady Wolves traded buckets and the lead. But as the game went down to the wire, it would be tied 35-35 at the end of regulation and result in overtime.

Defensive efforts took hold in the free basketball period, and neither team would relent — leading to a 40-40 score to force double overtime.

The Lady Ropers earned points from Morrison, Overstreet, and Simmons to start the second overtime, jumping into a two-possession lead. That would prove the difference as Will Rogers held on for the win.

Morrison led the Lady Ropers with 22 points, followed by Simmons with 16 points, and Overstreet with eight points.

Thierry led the Lady Wolves with 12 points, followed by Tylyn Thurman with 11 points, Daley Rice with six points, Abigail Clements, Allison McAlister, and Chrishelle Mills with four points each, Trinity Shirley with three points.

Next up for Will Rogers, the Lady Ropers will face McAlester Friday in the 7 p.m. semifinal matchup.

Shawnee will face Muskogee in the consolation semifinals Friday at 10 a.m.

JENKS 81, SOUTHEAST 18

Jenks faced off against Southeast in the opening round of the Primus Moore Invitational at McAlester, where the Lady Trojans used a hot start to blast out to a 81-18 win and advance to the semifinals.

The Lady Trojans went right to work at the opening tip, with Jill Twiehaus — a Rice commit — sparking a run that saw Jenks take a 30-2 lead after the opening period.

That opening tsunami of momentum propelled the Lady Trojans through the game, sealing away the victory.

Twiehaus led Jenks with 20 points, followed by Addison Dodder with 17 points, Hazel Ifeoma with 14 points, Jaedyn Jones with nine points, Kamryn Bacon with eight points, Amirah White with five points, Cameron Anderson with four points, and Danika West and Taryn Whitten with two points each.

Rebekah Cano led Southeast with five points, followed by Mia Gonzalez with four points, Kyrah Davis with three points, and Ana Martinez, Marian Soto, and Valentina Guzman with two points each.

Next up for Jenks, the Lady Trojans will face the winner between Edmond Santa Fe and Durant in Friday's semifinal at 4 p.m.

The Lady Spartans will advance to the consolation semifinals to battle the loser between Santa Fe and Durant Friday at 1 p.m.
