Jayden Davis injury: Vanderbilt baseball player needs surgery after being hit in face

Vanderbilt baseball's Jayden Davis needs surgery for damage to his orbital, coach Tim Corbin said after the Commodores' 8-7 loss to Mississippi State on Sunday.

Corbin said he did not know whether the injury was season-ending for the sophomore infielder.

Davis suffered the injury during the second game of the series Saturday when he was hit in the face by a pitch while squaring around to bunt. He left the game at that point and was not in the lineup Sunday. He was at the ballpark with the team but did not participate in pregame warmups.

Losing Davis is a big blow for the Commodores, as he was hitting .319 on the season with 12 doubles and two home runs. He had been even better in SEC play, hitting .347 with six walks and just eight strikeouts. His batting average during conference play led the team. During SEC play, he was also third in on-base percentage and fourth in slugging percentage and second on the team before Sunday with eight extra-base hits during conference play.
