Jaxon Smith-Njigba has record-breaking night against Utah ... and that was just at halftime

Ohio State sophomore receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba hauled in 185 yards receiving in the first half on Saturday in the Rose Bowl, breaking a 37-year-old program record in just one half.

And that's not all.

The sophomore from Rockwall, Texas, broke David Boston's single-season receiving yards record for Ohio State, surpassing the 1,435-yard mark for the year.

The breakout star of the 2021 season who was flanked by potential 2022 NFL first round picks Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave for much of the year, broke Cris Carter's bowl game record of 172 receiving yards in the first half.

Carter set the previous record in the 1985 Rose Bowl against USC, a 20-17 loss to the Trojans.

Smith-Njigba went into the locker room with the record and had seven catches for 185 yards and two touchdowns. He nearly had a third touchdown but fumbled near the end zone.

Another David Boston Ohio State record falls

Olave broke Boston's program record for touchdown catches earlier this season when caught career touchdown No. 35 against Michigan State in November.

Smith-Njigba entered the Rose Bowl with 1,259 yards receiving on the season.

Smith-Njigba broke Boston's single-game reception record with 15 for 240 yards against Nebraska on Nov. 6. earlier this year.

Smith-Njigba’s 240 receiving yards were also the second-most ever in a game by a Buckeye, trailing only Terry Glenn who finished with 253 against Pittsburgh in 1995.
