Janice Weiner wins Democratic nomination for Iowa Senate District 45 in Iowa City

With 100% of precincts reporting Tuesday, Janice Weiner won the Democratic primary race for Iowa Senate District 45 covering all of Iowa City and University Heights.

The raw vote count is 6,294 votes (86%) for Weiner, and 1,016 votes (14%) for John Raley. There were nine write-in votes and 7,319 total votes cast in this race.

Weiner is a resident of Iowa City and a three-year member of the City Council. She is a retired U.S. diplomat, serving 26 years in Germany, Mexico, Turkey, Canada and Poland.

Raley works as an Iowa City-based agent at American Family Insurance and has been in business for more than 40 years. He grew up in Glenview, Illinois, and moved to Iowa to attend and graduate from Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

Weiner will likely run uncontested for this seat in November unless the Republican Party holds a special nominating convention. If elected in November, she would replace longtime state Sen. Joe Bolkcom, who served in the seat representing Iowa City for more than 20 years before announcing his retirement in 2021.

Election results are unofficial until certified by the Johnson County Board of Supervisors next week.
