Jameson Williams suspended 6 games for violating NFL gambling policy

Former Alabama standout wide receiver Jameson Williams won’t be eligible to play in the first six regular season games of the 2023 season due to a suspension handed down today by the NFL. The suspension was due to a technicality of the league’s gambling policy.

Williams placed a legal wager on a non-NFL sporting event, which is allowed by the league. However, he did so in a location that the NFL doesn’t allow, such as a team facility.

The Detroit Lions wide receiver was one of five players to be disciplined for violating the gambling policy. Two players involved were suspended indefinitely and were released from their respective teams after the suspensions came down.

This comes not long after another former Alabama wide receiver, Calvin Ridley, was reinstated after serving a year-long suspension for violating the NFL’s rules regarding gambling.

In a statement shared through ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Williams’ representation released the following statement:

“Alliance Sports confirms that its client, Jameson Williams, has been suspended by the NFL for six games for violating the NFL’s gambling policy. Jameson takes full responsibility for his actions and is very apologetic to the NFL, his teammates and the fans and city of Detroit. However, it is important to note that Jameson’s violation was not for betting on football but rather due to a technical rule regarding the actual location in which the online bet was placed – and which would otherwise be allowed by the NFL outside of the club’s facility. Jameson would never intentionally jeopardize the integrity of the game he loves so much and looks forward to getting back to his team as soon as possible.”

Williams will still be allowed to participate in offseason training with the franchise and can even play in preseason games. His suspension will begin when the NFL’s 2023 regular season gets underway.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to cover Williams and other former Alabama players in the NFL as the 2023 offseason progresses.
