James Sample has been very adamant about his jersey number and the fact that it is not for sale. The Jacksonville Jaguars first-round selection Jalen Ramsey made it very clear that he wishes to wear number 23, which Sample currently owns. Ramsey wants to wear it partly due to the fact that he has signed with Nike’s Jordan brand.

If Ramsey really wants to wear the jersey, he is going to have to up his offers which are reportedly reaching $30,000, which in my opinion is a little weak. That $30,000 offer is only 0.2 percent of Ramsey’s $15 million signing bonus he just made. Sample is in his second year in the NFL and has a four year contract worth just over $2.8 million which is equivalent to a little more than $700,000 annually.

Ramsey might have better luck if he doubles Sample’s salary this year. For Sample, it is much more than it being the same number as Michael Jordan. Sample wears it because his birthday falls on the 23rd of June and for many other sentimental reasons that has to do with the town of Sacramento where he grew up. In fact,Sample even said, “He could care less that Jordan wore the same number.” Ramsey will have to wait until more defensive numbers free up before he can switch from number 38.
