Jaguars 38, Chargers 10: Jacksonville wins a West Coast blowout

The Jacksonville Jaguars had never beat the Chargers on the road before, had an 18-game road losing streak, and hadn’t won back-to-back games since the first half of the 2019 season. All those streaks ended Sunday when the Jaguars beat the brakes off the Chargers, 38-10.

Red zone struggles early in the game prevented the Jaguars from racing out to an early lead. After settling for short field goals on three trips inside the 10-yard line, the Jaguars found a rhythm in the second half and pulled away from the Chargers.

Trevor Lawrence threw three touchdown passes (one each to Zay Jones, Christian Kirk, and Marvin Jones), and James Robinson added a fourth when he broke free for 50 yards.

Here’s how it all went down in the Jaguars’ Week 3 win:

Jaguars MVP of the game: WR Zay Jones

Jones wasn’t one of the marquee offseason additions, but he’s clearly one of Lawrence’s favorite targets. After getting targeted 13 times in the first two weeks of the season, Jones caught 10 of 11 targets Sunday for 85 yards, including his first touchdown as a member of the Jaguars.

When Lawrence needs a third down conversion, Jones has been as reliable as it gets and he ate up the Chargers secondary for most of Week 3.

Chargers MVP of the game: QB Justin Herbert

It was somewhat of a surprise that Herbert played Sunday, given the rib cartilage fracture he suffered last week that kept him out of practice Friday. In hindsight, the Chargers probably wish they kept their young star quarterback out of action.

Regardless, it was a gutsy performance for Herbert who was without five-time Pro Bowl receiver Keenan Allen and starting center Corey Linsley. The Chargers also lost left tackle Rashawn Slater to a biceps injury.

Herbert still managed to throw for 297 yards and hit on a couple big throws downfield.

I mean … come on. What a throw. What a catch.

It was over when: Trevor Lawrence converted a fourth-and-short in the red zone with a sneak, then threw a four-yard touchdown to Christian Kirk.

It was still the third quarter, but the Jaguars got a two-point conversion after the touchdown to bury the Chargers under a three-touchdown deficit. That was all she wrote.

Lawrence and Herbert had similar passing totals Sunday. The difference was that Lawrence was more efficient and the Jaguars’ balanced offense carved up the Chargers defense both on the ground and through the air.

James Robinson finished with 100 rushing yards and a 50-yard touchdown. Travis Etienne ran for another 45 yards.

Up next: The Jaguars have another road assignment with a trip to play the Philadelphia Eagles.

On Sunday, the Eagles dominated the Washington Commanders in a 24-8 win, recording nine sacks and a safety. Philadelphia is 3-0 on the year with previous wins over the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings.
