Jackie Robinson Boys & Girls Club preps for Atlanta Braves World Series trophy tour

The countdown begins to one of the biggest events ever in Cairo, Georgia - the birthplace of Jackie Robinson.

The only Jackie Robinson Boys & Girls Club in the world is preparing for Jackie Robinson Day on Friday, April 15, when the Atlanta Braves World Series Trophy will stop in the city.

Cairo is located 34 miles north of Tallahassee.

"The relationship between the Atlanta Braves and our Jackie Robinson Boys & Girls Club is continuing to grow for our club and community," Club Director Stephen Francis said.

"We have been working closely with Braves reps with the planning of this awesome event. We still have to secure the law enforcement for public safety and security, and will be extending invites to elected officials and other dignitaries.

"The community is excited and buzzing as the days get closer."

The World Champions Trophy Tour presented by Truist is making 151 stops across Braves Country, honoring the organization's 151st year as a franchise.

At each stop, fans can celebrate the Braves historic 2021 World Series championship with an opportunity to take a photo with the Commissioner's Trophy.

The tour started on Feb. 15 in Atlanta and continues through the spring and summer.

Robinson was born on Jan. 31, 1919 in Cairo. A year after his birth, his mother moved him and his four siblings to California.

A multi-sports star, the Brooklyn Dodgers signed Robinson to a Major League contract in 1946.

He broke MLB's color barrier when he started at first base for the Dodgers on April 15, 1947.

Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. He died on Oct. 24, 1972, at the age of 53 after he had suffered a heart attack.
