The 17th edition of the highly competitive Indian Premier League was off to a thrilling start Friday with a nail-biting match between defending champions and five-time IPL winners Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The Super Kings won the opening match of the season by six wickets.

The IPL, arguably the biggest T20 tournament in the world, will have top cricket players from across the world participate in the event, that is expected to be played over a month.

Here's everything you need to know about the 17th edition of the Indian Premiere League, including match schedule and venues.

IPL 2024 match schedule

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has only announced the schedule for the first two weeks of IPL 2024 from March 22 to April 7.

21 matches will be played during the two-week period, "with each team playing a minimum of three matches and a maximum of five," said BCCI, in a news release. The reason behind not announcing the complete tournament schedule are the upcoming general elections that will be held in phases from April 19 to June 1.

Here's the schedule for the first two weeks of IPL 2024, including each match's start times in EST:

  • March 22: Chennai Super Kings vs. Royal Challengers Bangalore

  • March 23: Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals at 3:30 p.m. local time / 6 a.m. EST

  • March 23: Kolkata Knight Riders vs. Sunrisers Hyderabad at 7:30 p.m. local time / 10 a.m. EST

  • March 24: Rajasthan Royals vs. Lucknow Super Giants at 3:30 p.m. local time / 6 a.m. EST

  • March 24: Gujrat Titans vs. Mumbai Indians at 7:30 p.m. local time / 10 a.m. EST

  • March 25: Royal Challengers Bangalore vs. Punjab Kings at 7:30 p.m. local time / 10 a.m. EST

  • March 26: Chennai Super Kings vs. Gujarat Titans at 7:30 p.m. local time / 10 a.m. EST

  • March 27: Sunrisers Hyderabad vs. Mumbai Indians at 7:30 p.m. local time / 10 a.m. EST

  • March 28: Rajasthan Royals vs. Delhi Capitals at 7:30 p.m. local time / 10 a.m. EST

IPL 2024 match locations

The opening match of the 2024 Indian Premier League took place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in India’s southern city of Chennai, the home of the defending champions.

While IPL organizers have not yet announced the total prize money for this year’s edition, Al Jazeera reported that it could be anything around $6 million, based on previous trends, with the 2024 champions to get approximately $2.4 million and runners up $1.56 million.
