Introducing the Herald-Tribune 2023 All-Area Boys Swimming Team
At the end of each season, The Herald-Tribune selects All-Area teams honoring the best athletes for every sport. Coaches from Sarasota and Manatee county schools are sent nomination forms and are asked to nominate and rate their athletes as well as those from other teams. That data combined with The Herald-Tribune's research led to the selection of the All-Area teams.
FIRST TEAM
Casey Aten
School: Sarasota
Year: Senior
Highlights: Aten finished fourth in the 200 IM in 1:50.65, 12th in the 100 breaststroke in 58:29 and was part of the 200 free relay that finished fifth in 1:25.83.
Elias Corn
School: Sarasota
Year: Senior
Highlights: Corn finished fifth in the100 breaststroke in 56.93, 16th in the 200 IM in 1:55.20 and was part of the winning 200 medley relay that finished in 1:33.28 at the Class 4A State Meet.
Jackson DeBruin
School: Riverview
Year: Sophomore
Highlights: DeBruin finished sixth in the 500 free in 4:33.12, 11th in the 200 free in 1:41.56 and part of the 200 free relay team that finished 13th in 1:28.28.
Victor Izquierdo
School: Sarasota
Year: Senior
Highlights: Izquierdo finished 10th in the 50 free in 21.33 and was part of the winning 200 medley relay that finished 1:33.28, part of the 400 free relay that finished fourth in 3:05.78 and fifth in the 200 free relay in 1:25.85 at the Class 4A State Meet.
Denis Jones
School: Southeast
Year: Senior
Highlights: Jones finished sixth in the 500 free in 4:41.70 and 17th in the 200 free in 1:46.47 at the Class 3A Meet.
Andrew Malaj
School: Sarasota
Year: Freshman
Highlights: Malaj finished third in the 200 free in 1:40.58, eighth in the 100 free in 47.41 and was part of the 400 free relay team that finished fourth in 3:05.78.
David Melnychuk
School: Riverview
Year: Junior
Highlights: Melnychuk finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke in 50.43, 17th in the 200 IM in 1:55.88 and was part of the 200 free relay team that finished 13th in 1:28.28 at the Class 4A State Meet.
Ethan Ooi
School: Sarasota
Year: Senior
Highlights: Ooi finished 15th in the 500 free in 21.90, 10th in the 100 butterfly in 51.99 and was part of the 200 free relay team that finished fifth in 1:25.85.
Aidan Siers
School: Sarasota
Year: Senior
Highlights: Siers finished first in the 200 IM in 1:48.33, third in the 500 free in 4:25.58 and was part of the winning 200 medley relay that finished in 1:33.28 at the Class 4A State Meet.
Luca Simon
School: Sarasota
Year: Senior
Highlights: Simon finished 10th in the 100 butterfly in 50.45, 13th in the 50 free in 21.69 and was part of the 200 free relay that finished third in 1:25.85 and part of the 400 free relay team that finished fourth in 3:05.87 at the Class 4A State Meet.
Michael Traynor
School: Riverview
Year: Senior
Highlights: Traynor finished ninth in the 500 free in 4:34.83 and 11th in the 200 IM in 1:53.71 and was part of the 200 medley relay team that finished seventh in 1:37.56 at the Class 4A State Meet.
Bogdan Zverev
School: Sarasota
Year: Sophomore
Highlights: Zverev finished third in the 300 IM in 1:49.44, 11th in the 100 butterfly in 50.88 and was part of the winning 200 medley relay that finished in 1:33.28 at the Class 4A State Meet.

COACH OF THE YEAR
Andrew Eckhart
School: Sarasota
Highlights: Guided the Sailors to their fourth straight state championship and third consecutive Class 4A title. Using their exceptional depth, Sarasota scored 289 points to defeat Braddock Senior High by 20 points for the state title. The Sailors also won the 4A-Region 3 title by 240 points and the 4A-District 9 championship by 193 points.
