Michigan got on the board first versus the Spartans on Saturday night, with field goal by redshirt freshman kicker Quinn Nordin on its opening possession.
However, turnovers wound up being the story of the night for Michigan.
Fifth-year senior running back Ty Isaac set the tone with a fumble in the first quarter, and didn’t see action again until the second half.
Sophomore tight end Sean McKeon then lost a fumble late in the second quarter while the Maize and Blue were driving.
MSU touchdowns in the first and second quarter gave the Spartans a 14-3 lead at halftime.
Fifth-year senior quarterback John O’Korn struggled mightily in the second frame, tossing three interceptions.
A one-yard touchdown run by fifth-year senior fullback Khalid Hill with 8:09 left in the third quarter cut MSU’s lead to 14-10.
Heavy rains and winds certainly didn’t help matters after that point.
Neither offense did much in the rain, as MSU didn’t get its first first down of the second half until late in the fourth quarter.
The Wolverines had plenty of chances to grab a lead, but were never able to move the ball.
The Spartans had a chance to run out the clock, but Michigan used its timeouts and forced a punt.
O'Korn attempted to mount a game-winning drive, but a crucial drop by sophomore receiver Eddie McDoom stalled things.
A hail Mary attempt to the end zone with no time left fell incomplete and sealed the Spartan victory, 14-10.
Michigan actually outgained the Spartans, 300-252.
