Instant analysis of Bears’ 53rd overall pick, DT Gervon Dexter

The Chicago Bears selected Florida defensive tackle Gervon Dexter with the 53rd overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, addressing one of their top needs in the trenches.

Chicago added a space-eating, run-stopper for the middle of their defense line. Dexter is a player with tremendous upside. He’s limited as a pass rusher, but could become an elite run-stopper in the NFL.

Here’s a quick scouting report on Dexter:

Vitals

Position: DT

Age: 21

School: Florida

Measurables: 6-foot-6, 310 pounds

Strengths

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

  • Great size and strength for a 1-technique or 3-technique.

  • He uses length well to keep offensive linemen away from his body, freeing him up to make plays.

  • His explosive first step allows him to create penetration and get upfield, disrupting the run game and pulling OL.

Weaknesses

USA Today Sports

  • Inconsistent pad level. His height will always make it difficult, but Dexter has to play with better leverage.

  • His pass-rush skill set is limited. Instead of setting up the OL for a move, he often wins with athleticism or power.

  • Some scouts have questioned his motor/effort.

Fit with Bears

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Bears need a 1-technique or 3-technique to pair with Justin Jones, who can help stop the run. Chicago’s run defense was the second-worst in the NFL and will improve immediately with Gervon Dexter in the middle.

While his effort runs hot and cold, he has a rare combination of size, strength, and speed that doesn’t come around often. He’ll become a dominant interior player if he buys into HITS and the Bears system.
