Idiot drives on 'Field of Dreams' site in Iowa, causing significant damage
An idiot with an obviously twisted idea of what constitutes a joyride vandalized the “Field of Dreams” site in Dyersville, Iowa this week, causing significant damage.
According to the Dubuque Telegraph Herald, workers discovered the damage on Tuesday morning. Denise Stillman, who owns the site, which was built as the set for the beloved 1989 movie starring Kevin Costner, said repairs will likely cost thousands of dollars.
“Someone who is disturbed had some agenda to damage the field. It’s upsetting,” Stillman said.
The field manager, Al Steffen, said there are gashes up to four inches deep in the outfield.
“Whoever did it was really able to dig in,” Steffen said, adding this wasn’t the first time someone has driven onto the field. But this time, a combination of warm weather and steady rain meant the ground was soft.
Steffen said the majority of the damage was in center field and left field; the sprinkler system was also harmed.
“It’s disappointing that this would happen at this time,” Steffen said. “We won’t be able to do anything for months.”
There isn’t an accurate estimate of the cost to repair the field yet; Steffen said that may not be possible until spring comes.
There are no security cameras on the field, so officials can’t identify the car used in the vandalism.
Despite “Field of Dreams” being released almost 30 years ago, thousands of people still visit the site annually, running the bases and walking through the nearby corn fields, for free. Though repairs will likely still be ongoing, Stillman said the site will be open through the summer.
“A lot of people travel (from) all over the world to come see the Field of Dreams, and they don’t always check Facebook to make sure we are open,” Stillman said. “We’ll just have to keep operating as is.”
They have set up a GoFundMe page to help with the anticipated cost of repairs.
