Hurricane Ian: SCAD, Savannah State and Georgia Southern prepare their storm plans

As Savannah residents prepare for effects of Hurricane Ian, which made landfall in Florida on Wednesday, universities in the Savannah area are informing students about hurricane preparedness.

Local institutions such as SCAD, Savannah State University and Georgia Southern’s Armstrong campus have different plans to ensure the safety of students, staff and faculty ahead of the weekend.

Here is what students and parents should know about hurricane plans for local colleges:

Savannah College of Art and Design

As of Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 9:50 p.m., SCAD plans to close down all academic and administrative buildings. This plan will be in effect from Thursday, Sept. 29 until Monday, Oct. 3.

As stated on the college's Hurricane Ian information center website: residential buildings, dining halls and transportation services will remain open for students who plan to stay on campus. The school encourages students who plan to leave the Savannah area to do so early Thursday morning, ahead of the storm’s arrival.

Savannah State University

Savannah State University officials have sent out information to students and facility detailing hurricane preparedness to its students.

According to a notice to students, Savannah State will move classes to virtual beginning 4 p.m. tomorrow and running through Friday. Normal classes will resume on Monday, Oc

The notice added that all campus activities schedule after 5 p.m. Wednesday have been canceled.

Dining services for students staying on campus will be available with adjusted hours based on storm activity.

Georgia Southern Armstrong Campus

Georgia Southern is moving all classes online and closing its campuses due to Hurricane Ian starting at 1 p.m. Thursday.

All in-person events are canceled Thursday afternoon and evening, all day Friday and until officials can ensure campuses are safe.

Until that “all-clear” is issued, only essential personnel should be on campus after 1 p.m. on Thursday. Employees should check with their supervisor if they are unsure about their status as an essential employee. Faculty who are toggling over to online learning should do so from their homes. If they are hosting an in-person class close to 1 pm Thursday and wish to transition to online instruction, that is an authorized option.
