On Monday April 25, Hudson Kiwanis honored both the scholarship winners and the Power of the Pen winners.

The two sponsored schools for Power of the Pen, Seton Catholic School and Hudson Middle School, will be sending 13 students to the May 12 state finals at Otterbein University. That means that over 50% of the sponsored creative writing students qualified for the state finals. Given that only 20% of the writers from the regional competition qualify for the state finals, speaks volumes to the quality of the students and the guidance of their coaches.

The Hudson Kiwanis recently honored the Power of Pen winners from Seton Catholic School and Hudson Middle School. The winners from Seton Catholic School are Lila Morley and Emma Hamilton; the winners from Hudson Middle School are Becca Carter and Jerry Du.

Several scholarships were awarded on April 25. Three Memorial and one Six District scholarship, each valued at $3,000, were presented. The Memorial winners were: Caroline VonVille, Emi Uijtewall, and Hailey Walker; the Six District winner was Laurel Gomersal.

In addition, three Athletic Scholarships, each valued at $1,000, were awarded. For baseball, Ben Sage; for girls’ basketball, Josephine Lawler; and for boys’ basketball, Carter Buzzelli. All of these scholarships are given to high school seniors that excel in leadership and service to the community.

For 70 years Hudson Kiwanis has served the Hudson Schools and Community, since its founding in 1951. Since 2000, over $1 million has been given to the schools and community. Some of the visible things are the splash pad, basketball courts, high school tennis courts and safety town, just to name a few. Most recently a grant was made to the high school for the hydroponic garden.

In addition, Kiwanis continues to provide several scholarships for graduating seniors, school grants, funding for Power of the Pen and many more things that support the schools and community. The funding for all this comes from the Hoops Classic Basketball Tournament for boys and girls, recreational baseball programs and the sale of Christmas Poinsettias.
