Horse Creek Academy throws it back to the 2000s

Oct. 20—The students and staff at Horse Creek Academy took throwback Thursday to a new level this week.

They threw it back to the 2000s in honor of the 20th anniversary of the charter school, said Sarah Morris, the school's assessment and community relations director.

"It's been really fun. It's been quirky, fun and exciting to have a fun reason to dress up in a non-traditional way that's also given us a lot of ways to connect with our students about how the times were back in the 2000s, and they thought that was hilarious," Morris said. "It's been a great bonding moment."

Students and staff donned all the major trends from the early 2000s, including emo outfits, preppy outfits with a popped collar, track suits, Ugg boots and even some "Mean Girls"-inspired outfits.

Even though it wasn't Wednesday, the kindergarten teachers, along with some first-grade teachers, still wore their pink — a reference to a classic line from the "Mean Girls" movie that debuted in 2004.

"Today has been a great day. We truly enjoyed it," said kindergarten teacher Kim Coach. "We decided to dress like the 'Mean Girls' because we all wanted to be connected and show the kindergartens we're a great team and we should all work together."

First-grade teacher Christina Williams went the punk route with her Avril Lavigne-inspired outfit.

"I found the shirt at Goodwill, so that helped. I had a little Avril Lavigne phase back in the 2000s. She's pretty cool," Williams said.

Morris said a lot of the students participated in the throwback day.

"It was really neat at car line this morning to see everyone arriving all decked out like it was 2002," Morris said.

With this being the 20th anniversary of the school, there are a few more events planned, including recognizing some longterm employees.

"We're also having an oyster roast and toast to 20 years in January to kind of close out the 20th year celebration," Morris said.
