Hornets' Carter-Williams (shoulder) to undergo season-ending surgery

Charlotte Hornets backup point guard Michael Carter-Williams will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a posterior labral tear in his left shoulder, the team announced Friday.

Carter-Williams suffered the injury in the first half of the Hornets' loss to the Toronto Raptors last Sunday. He returned to play in the second half but missed the team's two games since. An MRI and examination from Hornets orthopedist Dr. Marc Cook confirmed the tear, per the team's news release.

In his first season with the Hornets after signing a one-year deal last July, the 26-year-old averaged career lows with 4.6 points, 2.2 assists and 2.7 rebounds in 52 games (two starts). For his career, Carter-Williams has averaged 11.5 points, 4.9 assists and 4.7 rebounds across 287 games (191 starts).

Carter-Williams was named Rookie of the Year for the Philadelphia 76ers in 2013-14, averaging 16.7 points, 6.3 assists and 6.2 rebounds that season. He previously had surgery on his right shoulder in May of 2014.
