Hornell softball opens Section V playoffs with win over Pal-Mac

HORNELL — Raegan Evingham went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles as Hornell opened the Section V playoffs strong with a 9-3 home win over visiting Palmyra-Macedon Monday evening.

Evingham scored two runs for the Raiders, who seized a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Hornell tacked on another run in the second before Palmyra-Macedon tied it up with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning.

Hornell responded with a big four-run frame in the bottom half of the inning and never looked back. The Raiders tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth.

The Hornell offense pounded 12 hits. Leadoff batter Parker Graham set the table with two hits, a walk, a stolen base and two runs scored. Graham drove in a run as well. Lillian Hoyt and Ireland Harrison both went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Sophia Harwood drove in two runs with a hit and scored a run. Isabella Barnes had a hit and scored twice. Kadience Gollnitz knocked a hit and drove in a run.

Hoyt tossed all seven innings, scattering five hits while striking out five with four walks, allowing just two earned runs.

Hornell improved to 9-12 on the season and will now continue its chase for a Section V title with a matchup against Waterloo on Thursday.
