Hopewell Area School District is on the hunt for a football head coach for the high school once again.

On Monday night, Mike Vukovcan of Hopewell Sports Nation reported that John Rosa has resigned as Hopewell High School’s football coach.

Rosa was hired in January and approved by the Hopewell School Board to succeed Matt Weiss as head coach. Rosa announced that he took a job at Winchester Thurston High School in Pittsburgh as athletic director.

Rosa said to Hopewell Sports Nation that the opportunity fell into his lap.

“It was a very, very strong offer that they made me,” Rosa stated to HSN. “It was a family decision and a very difficult decision for me. Even with the AD job at Hopewell and what they were offering, it was too good of a job to pass up. I wasn’t for sure getting the AD job at Hopewell so with that being said, there were still some unknown there. Then when this opportunity presented itself, kind of by accident, I never expected the offer to be what it was.”

The Beaver County Times reached out to the Hopewell Athletic Department. Athletic Director Don Short, who recently submitted his resignation to retire and was approved by the School Board for a July retirement, provided a statement from Hopewell Area Superintendent Dr. Jeff Beltz.

“John Rosa accepted the athletic director position at Winchester Thurston in Pittsburgh,” the statement read. “John has not officially resigned as Hopewell's football coach at the present time, but I do expect that to occur. There is not much more to share at this point, as much of this just unfolded late last week. John and the current staff began spring workouts yesterday with plans to continue with regular workouts this week and into the summer.”

Last year, the Vikings went 0-6-0 in Western Hills Conference play, finishing last in the section. Meanwhile, overall, the Vikings picked up one win against New Brighton, 56-13.

Winchester Thurston, a private school located in Shadyside, does not have a football team.

The Beaver County Times will update once more information becomes available.
