Bettor seeking $5M payout wagers $10K that Wizards will win NBA championship

Five million dollars is a lot of cash.

It's the kind of payout sports bettors dream of when laying long-shot parlays and futures bets. It's the exact payout that tempted one bettor to lay down five figures on the Washington Wizards.

According to BetMGM, a bettor wagered $10,000 that the Wizards will win the NBA championship. Not in the distant future. This season.

This doesn't exactly qualify as smart money.

The 8-17 Wizards sit in 14th place out of 15 teams in the East. They're more likely to deal their best player — Bradley Beal — than to accrue any difference makers prior to the NBA's trade deadline. They don't stand a reasonable chance of making the playoffs, much less winning four postseason series.

It's the reason they're lumped in with the rest of the dregs of the NBA at +50,000 at the bottom of the NBA futures odds. They're joined there by the New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons and Oklahoma City Thunder as the longest shots to win the title this season.

There's a reason those odds are so long and the payout so large. But one can dream, I guess.
