Hope women swim past Calvin in ranked rivalry battle; men defeated

HOLLAND - The Hope College women's swimming and diving team topped rival Calvin 159-141 on Saturday.

The No. 12 Flying Dutch topped the No. 15 Knights with depth and plenty of top-level speed in a meet that is a precurser to how good the MIAA Championship meet could be.

Hope's Sara Kraus won the 100-yard backstroke in 58.94, leading a 1-2-3 finish with Katie Hermann (59.91) and Emma Hartman (1:00.01).

Greta Gidley won the 50 freestyle in 23.80, holding off Calvin's Meghan Bengelink (24.37).

Ashlea Swingewood won the 200 butterfly in 2:12.98 and Hermann won the 200 IM (2:10.76(.

Hope's Cameron Hamilton won 1-meter diving with 233.35 points, while Abby Koops won 3-meter with 249.05 points. Bella Turner won the 100 freestyle (53.40).

Calvin's Isabella Gable, Elise Bajwa, Maggie Farrell and Sydney Sonday won the 200 medley relay in 1:45.28.

Farrell won the 100 butterfly (55.88) ahead of Gidley (56.28). Bajwa won the 100 breaststroke (1:05.46) and 200 breaststroke (2:26.04). Gable won the 200 freestyle (1:52.67) and 500 freestyle (5:08.88).

Calvin's Emma Merkel won the 1,000 freestyle in 10:49.01 and 200 backstroke in 2:03.99).

Gable, Sonday, Bengelink and Merkel won the 400 free relay in 3:31.79.

The No. 19 Hope men lost 229-73 to No. 8 Calvin at Holland Community Aquatic Center.

In the men's meet, Hope's Conner Halberg won the 200 freestyle in 1:44.24.

Calvin diver Wil Goodpaster of Hamilton won 1-meter with a score of 280.25.

Calvin's Charles Platt, Caleb Gemmen, Julian Camy and Forrest Peterson won the 200 medley relay (1:30.66).

Gemmen and Tim Hays tied for the win in the 200 breaststroke in 2:05.41. Camy won the 100 buttefly (48.67).

Peterson won the 100 freestyle (46.71) ahead of Ben Catton (47.05) and the 50 freestyle (20.51). Platt won the 100 backstroke (50.72).

Calvin's Andrew Stimpert won the 1,000 freestyle (10:02.86). Eric Chimes won the 200 butterfly (1:50.79) and 500 freestyle (4:46.01). Hays won the 100 breaststroke (56.33) and 200 IM (1:52.08). David Bajwa won the 200 backstroke in 1:52.26.

Bajwa, Peterson, Vlad Molin and Platt wonthe 400 free relay in 3:06.37.

Meder clocks indoor top time in DIII

Eli Meder made his first indoor race of the indoor track and field season a sensational one.

The Hope College senior clocked NCAA Division III's fastest time of the season on Saturday at the University of Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind.

Meder (Williamston, Michigan / Lansing Catholic HS) clocked a school-record run of 1 minute, 50.81 seconds in a 10-runner field that primarily featured Division I entrants.

Heading into Saturday, Division III's fastest men's 800 run belonged to Noah Jorgenson of Central College (Iowa) at 1:51.25. The mark was set on December 8 at the Iowa State Invitational.

Meder surpassed his previous Hope record by nearly three seconds.

University of Michigan freshman Trent McFarland won the 800 at Notre Dame by posting a time of 1:49.50.

The top 20 declared runners in individual events qualify for the 2024 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 8-9 at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Va.
