Hillsdale boys track and field embraces the windy weather to take first at Warrior Invite

GRASS LAKE — A few days after their opening season dual, the Hillsdale and Jonesville varsity track teams would battle again, this time at the Grass Lake Invitational. The Hillsdale Hornets boys team would prevail, bringing home first place honors with final points total of 132.25. Jonesville took second in the boys scores with a 107.75.

"Due to the wind, the times were not at their best," Hillsdale coach Clay Schiman said. "I was happy with how we dealt with that, and we saw lots of improvements. We take another step towards our goals for the year."

The Hillsdale girls track team took fourth overall with a score of 77. Jonesville came in seventh with a final points total of 44. Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard won the girls title with a total of 107 points.

Track Events

In the boys events, Hillsdale senior Hunter Wilson took first place in the 100 meter dash with a final time of 11.46. Fellow senior Dawson Adams took second in the race with a time of 12.04.

In the 400, Hornet junior Miles Brown had a third place finish with a time of 55.06. Just behind him was Jonesville sophomore Nicholas Fowler in fourth with a 55.14. In the 800, Jonesville senior Gavin Van Kampen took first with a time of 2:02.93. Hornet senior Nolan Grant took third with a time of 2:07.41.

In the 1600 meters, Jonesville freshman Caleb Blonde won with a time of 4:51.60. Jonesville distance runner and freshman Collin Fucile took fifth in the 3200 with a time of 11:18.39.

The hurdles 110 meter race was won by senior Hornet Brice Van Zant with a time of 17.02. Freshman Comet Reece Rundquist took third with a time of 19.74. The 300 hurdles saw Hillsdale freshman Evan Towne take third with a time of 45.37. Van Zant took fourth with a 46.15. Just behind him was Comet junior Nathan More with a time of 46.75.

The Hornet boys 4x100 relay team of Stephen Petersen, Hunter Wilson, Jace Lennox and Dawson Adams took first with a time of 44.34. The Comet relay team took third with a time of 45.72.

The Hornets would also win the 4x200. Hayden Handy, Cam Arnold, Brayden Taylor and Dominick Coke won with a time of 1:35.83. The Comet team took second place with a time of 1:36.51.

Hillsdale runners Miles Brown, Hunter Wilson, Jace Lennox and Dominick Coke would battle Caleb Blonde, David Fowler, Nicholas Fowler and Gavin Van Kampen in the final race of the boys events. The Hornets won the 4x400 with a time of 3:34.91. The Comet runners took second with a time of 3:35.24.

Only the Comets competed in the 4x800 and would win the event. The team of David Fowler, Caleb Blonde, Zachery Childress and Gavin Van Kampen finished with a time of 8:29, outpacing the second-place team by around 40 seconds.

In the girls track events, Natalia Galindo Gabande took fourth for Hillsdale in the 100 dash with a time of 14.36, a new PR. Jonesville senior Brooke Sharp took fifth with a time of 14.36. In the 200 dash, Hillsdale senior Annemarie Moore took second with a time of 29.18.

In the 400-meter dash, Sharp took first with a time of 1:04.83. Freshman Kiely Kroa of Hillsdale took fifth with a time of 1:08.27. In the 800, Hornet Ava Evans took ninth with a PR of 2:58.91. Joelleane Gulledge of Jonesville took 10th with a 3:01.99.

In the 1600 meter race, junior Chloe Stalhood took fourth for Hillsdale with a time of 5:48.77. Claire Flannery took 13th for the Hornets with a time of 7:00.84. Stalhood would then take second in the 3200 race with a time of 13:07.28. Comet freshman Keira Knight took seventh with a time of 15:20.21.

The 100 meter hurdles saw Jonesville senior Hallie James take eighth with a time of 21.92. Hillsdale senior Kelah Hodge took fourth in the 300 race with a time of 57.39. Freshman Amelia Means took seventh with a time of 1:00.09.

The Hornet team of Megan Kast, Annemarie Moore, Amelia Dietz and Talicia Wortham took first in the 4x100 with a time of 53.87. The Comet team took seventh with a time of 58.13.

The 4x200 saw Hillsdale earn third place with a time of 1:54.59. Kelah Hodge joined Kast, Dietz and Moore for that race. The Comets took sixth overall with a time of 1:59.98.

The Comet team of Zoey Udzik, Joeleane Gulledge, Payton Nichelson and Brooke Sharp took third in the 4x400 with a time of 4:42.94.

The 4x800 saw the Hornet team of Abby Amburgey, Kiely Kroa, Ava Evans and Chloe Stalhood take third with a time of 11:38.86. The Comets took fifth with a time of 12:13.50.

Field Events

In the boys field events, Comet junior Scott Aube took second with a throw distance of 40' 4.25. Teammate Cooper Stevens took fourth with a throw of 39' 7.75. In discus, Hornet senior Ethan Amburgey took first with a new personal record throw of 118' 6. He battled teammate John Petersen, who also had a new PR throw of 117' 6 to take second.

In high jump, Hillsdale sophomore Ashton Thornsbury took second with a jump height of 6' 0. In long jump, Hornet junior Hayden Handy took first with a 20' 1 jump distance. Teammate Stephen Petersen took third with a jump of 19' 4. Comet Jaren Trujillo took fifth with a PR jump of 18' 10.

In pole vault, Jonesville's Makinlee Packer took second with an 11' 6 clearance. Hornet senior Declan Flannery took third with a 10' 6 clearance.

In the girls field events, Jonesville freshman Megan Lee took eighth in shot put with a throw of 28' 2.75. Hornet sophomore Baeleigh Francis threw a new PR distance of 25' 5.5. Lee took fifth in the discus event with a throw of 82' 5. Teammate Elaina VanBuskirk took seventh with a throw of 79' 4.5.

In high jump, Payton Nichelson took seventh with a jump of 4' 8. Kiely Kroa took eighth with a jump of 4' 6. Natalia Galindo Gabande won the long jump event with a new PR jump of 15' 0. Teammate Amelia Dietz took 12th with a 12' 3.

In pole vault, Kelah Hodge took second with a clearance height of 8' 0.
